Connie Hedegaard and Denmark’s energy policies

Since 2007, Connie Hedegaard has been behind Denmark’s energy successes. In April, she signed an action plan with India [2] on renewable energy. One notable achievement was her role in introducing Denmark’s Energy Policy 2008-2011. The policy made her country the first in the world to commit to an overall energy reduction, not just a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. It includes the following language.

Energy Savings: A target of 2% reduction of total energy use from 2006 levels by 2011, and 4% by 2020.

Renewable Energy: Increased biomass/waste and wind energy and provide large, annual subsidies for solar and wave energy. Regarding wind power, plans include support for two 200 MW offshore wind farms that are scheduled to begin energy production in 2012. Additionally, money has been set aside for informational and labeling campaigns aimed at replacing oil-fired furnaces with heat pumps.

Energy taxes: Higher taxes on CO2 emitters, as well as a new tax on emitters of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

Energy technology: Doubled funding for energy technology R&D.

Transport: Extended the electric vehicle tax exemption to 2012 and introduced a tax exemption for hydrogen vehicles. Planned a tests scheme for electric vehicles. Set the goal to use 5.75% biofuels for all land transit by 2010 and 10% by 2020, in line with EU targets.

On the other hand, Hans Jørgen Koch, Deputy State Secretary at Ministry of Climate and Energy of Denmark with Connie Hedegaard is one of three other candidates/nominees for Director General of IRENA. …”

“Budget Deficit” vs. “National Debt”—

Suppose you want to spend more money this month than your income. This situation is called a “budget deficit”. So you borrow (ie; use your credit card). The amount you borrowed (and now owe) is called your debt. You have to pay interest on your debt. If next month you don’t have enough money to cover your spending (another deficit), you must borrow some more, and you’ll still have to pay the interest on the loan. If you have a deficit every month, you keep borrowing and your debt grows. Soon the interest payment on your loan is bigger than any other item in your budget. Eventually, all you can do is pay the interest payment, and you don’t have any money left over for anything else. This situation is known as bankruptcy.

Each year since 1969, Congress has spent more money than its income. The Treasury Department has to borrow money to meet Congress’s appropriations.

We pay interest on that huge debt. And now the Treasury is having trouble finding lenders!

38% Say Deficit Reduction Top Priority, 23% Say Health Care Reform

“…While cutting the deficit remains the top priority, 66% say it is the presidential objective least likely to be achieved. At the other extreme, 40% say health care reform is the goal most likely to be achieved.
However, while most Americans believe major changes are needed in the nation’s health care system, most also oppose the reform plans proposed by the president and congressional Democrats. Half say that passing no legislation would be better than passing the bill currently working its way through Congress.

Adding to the challenge, voters see the goals of deficit reduction and health care reform as contradictory: 68% say passage of the health care plan will increase the deficit.

All through the year there has been a huge partisan divide on the president’s priorities. Among Democratic voters, health care reform ranks number one with 41% considering it the top priority. Among Republicans and unaffiliated voters, health care reform ranks fourth behind deficit reduction, energy development and education. Fifty-five percent (55%) of Republicans say cutting the deficit in half is the most important goal, a view shared by 43% of those not affiliated with either major party.

Men overwhelmingly see deficit reduction as most important while women are more evenly divided.

Middle-income Americans, those earning $40,000 to $75,000 a year, are most likely to see deficit reduction as the top issue, but a plurality of all income groups share that view. …”

$1.4 Trillion in Red Ink Means Less to Spend On Obama’s Ambitious Jobs, Stimulus Policies

“..At about 10 percent of the overall economy, the gap between federal spending and tax collections is the largest on record since the end of World War II, and bigger in nominal terms than the past four years of deficits combined. Next year is unlikely to be much better, budget analysts say. And Obama’s current policies would drive the budget gap into the trillion-dollar range for much of the next decade.

As they unveiled the final 2009 figure, administration officials argued that expensive emergency programs — such as the $700 billion bank bailout requested by the Bush administration and the $787 billion economic stimulus package Obama signed during his first days in office — were essential to halting a frightening economic slide earlier this year. The deficit ultimately was lower than expected because those programs worked, they said.

But they tacitly acknowledged that the administration has yet to chart a clear path through the fiscal thicket. …”

A man of many mistakes

“…The date: Jan. 7, 1993, just 13 days before President-elect Clinton is to take office. The place: Little Rock, Ark. The event: a briefing of President-elect Clinton by his top advisers on the economy. Larry Summers, about to be appointed Undersecretary of the Treasury for International Affairs, agrees with what many of Clinton’s advisers say: It is important to reduce the U.S. government budget’s deficit, even in the short run.

What’s striking about this is that the budget deficit at the time was about the same, as a percent of GDP, as it is now. In fiscal year 1993, the deficit was 3.9% of GDP, and for this fiscal year, as noted, it will be at least 3.3% of GDP. Yet, virtually all of Clinton’s advisers, including Summers, wanted to cut the deficit, not increase it. Perhaps the difference is that the unemployment rate was so low then that increasing the deficit would have, in their Keynesian way of looking at things, “overheated the economy.” Well, no, not quite. In fact, the unemployment rate in November 1992, the latest month for which they would have had data, was 7.4%. The most-recent unemployment rate for the current U.S. economy, by contrast, was 6.5%, almost one whole percentage point lower.

Why the difference? The main one, I believe, was political. President-elect Clinton had just won a tight election in a three-way race with then-President Bush and Ross Perot. Perot’s major issue had been the importance of reducing the budget deficit, and he had touched a nerve in the American voting public. Perot had emerged with 19% of the vote, even after having suspended his campaign briefly, and he had even received more votes than Clinton in one state, Utah. Obama, by contrast, had no credible opposition that was talking about the budget deficit. Even if John McCain was a critic of budget deficits, he never presented a credible plan for reducing them. So a reasonable question to ask is this: How much will Larry Summers use his brilliance and how much will he simply twist with the political winds?”

US budget deficit hits record $1.4 trillion

“…The US government closed its 2009 fiscal year with a record 1.417 trillion dollar budget deficit as it poured resources to contain a serious financial crisis that plunged the nation into recession.

The deficit was some 962 billion US dollars higher than the prior year and amounted to 10 percent of US gross domestic product (GDP), the highest since 1945, officials said Friday.

The huge jump in the budget shortfall stemmed from both declining revenues and a massive ramping up of spending in a fiscal stimulus to jolt the world’s largest economy from a prolonged recession following the worst financial crisis in decades.

Receipts for the fiscal year that ended in September totalled 2.105 trillion US dollars while outlays were 3.522 trillion US dollars, the Treasury said.

Officials, however, pointed out that the deficit was 162 billion US dollars lower than the 1.580 trillion US dollars forecast by the administration of President Barack Obama, who inherited the flood of red ink from his predecessor George W. Bush. …”

ACORN tentacles spread throughout White House staff

“…Over the past 2 months as Americans have turned against the proposed government takeover of healthcare and other initiatives of the Obama administration, it has also come to light that the President and his operatives have loaded up the White House staff with individuals who have ties to ACORN and big labor.

One of the latest to come to light is Valerie Jarrett’s staff member Buffy Wicks.

Jarrett, of course, is the top senior adviser to Barack Obama who has been with him since the beginning in Illinois and is described by the President himself as a close, personal family friend who is ‘like a sister to me.’ She is also the one who recommended Vann Jones for the job of ‘green jobs czar.’

As a staff assistant to Jarrett, Buffy Wicks’ position is ‘Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.’ In other words, she is a community organizer whose employment history involves working with ACORN and labor unions to promote and implement a Leftist agenda on U.S. business, particularly targeting corporations like Wal-Mart:

What the Obama Administration’s Buffy Wicks did with Wakeup, and it continues to do with an apparent partnership with ACORN, is to engage in a “corporate campaign” against Wal-Mart in an attempt to inflict as much financial stress on its target as possible. For an insiders view of what it is like to be a target of a corporate campaign a good read is Dave Bego’s book, The Devil at My Doorstep, a chronicle of the shameless three-year corporate campaign he and his employees endured.

These corporate campaigns are not about worker choice, they are about inflicting financial costs and public image damages to companies like Bego’s and Wal-Mart.

Essentially, this means that Buffy Wicks was a professional troublemaker hired by Big Labor to work hand-in-hand with ACORN in an effort to inflict pain to bring one of the nation’s largest employers to its knees. So far, the efforts by Wicks and ACORN have only served to reduce Wal-Mart’s ability to hire new people and lower prices for its customers.

Now, ACORN collaborator Wicks is inside the Obama White House as it oversees record unemployment. If the White House continues to place Big Labor staffers like Wicks who worked for organizations hostile to worker freedom throughout its Administration, then the Obama Administration will likely become the antithesis to job growth and the primary obstacle to any future U.S. economic recovery. …”

ACORN-Tied Buffy Wicks from Obama White House in on NEA Propaganda Art Call

“…It turns out Buffy Wicks, deputy director of President Obama’s White House Office of Public Engagement, was on the teleconference call.

Wicks is a political operative who was worked with ACORN.

My sources in the progressive movement say Wicks handled the Obama campaign in Missouri last year. Obama lost in Missouri and activists in that state and people within the Obama campaign placed the blame for the defeat squarely on her shoulders.

After failing to win Missouri for Obama, Wicks had a very hard time finding a job but somehow she landed a job in the Obama White House. It’s unclear how she did that.

Wicks used to work for Wake Up Wal-Mart (wakeupwalmart.com), which is not a formal affiliate of ACORN but is an ACORN-sponsored spinoff group. The group works very closely with ACORN and is modeled after ACORN’s own anti-Wal-Mart affiliate W*A*R*N* (Wal-Mart Alliance for Reform Now).

Wake Up Wal-Mart entered into a national partnership with ACORN in 2005. In a Wake Up Wal-Mart press release from 2005, ACORN national president Maude Hurd said: “This is a new day in the fight to change Wal-Mart. We have created an unprecedented, bottom-up force for change which will demonstrate why Wal-Mart needs to change now.” …”

An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities aka Hatch Act

“…The Hatch Act of 1939 is a United States federal law whose main provision is to prohibit federal employees (civil servants) from engaging in partisan political activity. Named after Senator Carl Hatch of New Mexico, the law was officially known as An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities.

The act precluded federal employees from membership in “any political organization which advocates the overthrow of our constitutional form of government.” During the Second Red Scare, this designation was interpreted to include communist and labor organizations. …”

“…The original Act forbids intimidation or bribery of voters and restricted political campaign activities by federal employees. It prohibits using any public funds designated for relief or public works for electoral purposes. It also forbids officials paid with federal funds from using promises of jobs, promotion, financial assistance, contracts, or any other benefit to coerce campaign contributions or political support.

The most restrictive measure was brought about by Republicans in the Senate. It dictates that persons below the policymaking level in the executive branch of the federal government must not only refrain from political practices that would be illegal for any citizen but must abstain from “any active part” in political campaigns.

An amendment on July 19, 1940 extended coverage to state and local employees whose salaries include any federal funds. This amendment also set an annual ceiling of $3 million for political parties’ campaign expenditures and $5,000 for individual campaign contributions. …”

What Did The White House Do Wrong?

“…By seeking to enlist the private sector in lobbying for the President’s agenda, the alleged conduct may have violated the Anti-Lobbying Act (18 U.S.C. §1913), which as Ben Shapiro pointed out in a previous piece, explicitly provides:

No part of the money appropriated by any enactment of Congress shall, in the absence of express authorization by Congress, be used directly or indirectly to pay for any personal service, advertisement, telegram, telephone, letter, printed or written matter, or other device, intended or designed to influence in any manner a Member of Congress, a jurisdiction, or an official of any government, to favor, adopt, or oppose by vote or otherwise, any legislation, law, ratification, policy, or appropriation, whether before or after the introduction of any bill, measure or resolution proposing such legislation, law, ratification, policy or appropriation.

The Anti-Lobbying Act, according to government handbooks, prevents government employees from engaging in “substantial ‘grass roots’ lobbying campaigns … expressly urging individuals to contact government officials in support of or opposition to legislation …. Provid[ing] administrative support for lobbing activities of private organizations”

It is important to note that 18 U.S.C. §1913 only applies to federal officers or employees and not to the private recipients of federal grants, contracts or other federal disbursements. Thus, while the artists who responded to the NEA’s request for political help may not have violated this particular provision of federal law, Yosi Sergant, who was apparently the main person behind the NEA phone call, and other members of the White House staff who were involved in the May 12 meeting at the White House, may very well have violated §1913. Those staffers included “people very close to the President” according to Mike Strautmanis, Chief of Staff for the Office of Public Engagement. Punishment for such a violation can be severe – a civil penalty of not less than $10,000 and not more than $100,000 for each violation. …”

White House caught on tape directing politicization of National Endowment for the Arts

The latest Breitbart blockbuster has been released. The huge post by Patrick Courrielche on BigGovernment.com includes comprehensive transcripts and audios, as well as excerpted key segments. White House official Buffy Wicks, who works for Valerie Jarrett, the insider’s insider at the White House, is clearly directing political art (“specific tasks”) be produced. Jarrett is close to both Michelle and Barack Obama.

In the following segment, Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, clearly identifies this arts group as a pro-Obama collective and warns them of some “specific asks” that will be delivered later in the meeting.

“I just first of all want to thank everyone for being on the call and just a deep deep appreciation for all the work you all put into the campaign for the 2+ years we all worked together.”

“I’m actually in the White House and working towards furthering this agenda, this very aggressive agenda.”

Buffy Jo Christina Wicks (born August 10, 1977) is the executive director of the Priorities USA Action pro-Hillary Clintonsuper PAC and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.^[1] She is also vice-president for political affairs at AKPD Message and Media. She is the former deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Obama Administration.^[2] She is also known by the sobriquet given to her by Walmartexecutives, “Buffy the Walmart slayer,” for her role as the former political director of the 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart campaign to protest the minimum wages and benefits paid to Walmart employees.^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]

Born in Foresthill, California in 1977, Wicks graduated from Placer High School in 1995. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1999 with a B.A. degree in political science and history.^[8]^[9]

In 2000, she began a two-year program for an International Master in Peace, Conflict, and Development Studies (PEACE Master) of the Universitat Jaume I (UJI),Castellón, Spain, under the UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace, but left in 2001 and did not complete the degree.^[10]

“…Progressivism is a political and social term for ideologies and movements favoring or advocating changes or reform, usually in an egalitarian direction for economic policies (public management) and liberal direction for social policies (personal choice). Progressivism is often viewed in opposition to conservative ideologies.

In the United States, the term progressivism emerged in the late 19th century into the 20th century in reference to a more general response to the vast changes brought by industrialization: an alternative to both the traditional conservative response to social and economic issues and to the various more radical streams of socialism and anarchism which opposed them. Political parties, such as the Progressive Party, organized at the start of the 20th century, and progressivism made great strides under American presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson.[1]

Despite being associated with left-wing politics, the term “progressive” has also been used by groups not particularly left-wing. The Progressive Democrats in the Republic of Ireland took the name “progressivism” despite being considered centre-right, or classical liberal. The European Progressive Democrats was a mainly heterogeneous political group in the European Union. For most of the period from 1942-2003, the largest conservative party in Canada was the Progressive Conservative Party.

Progressive Era

“…The Progressive Era in the United States was a period of reform which lasted from the 1890s to the 1920s.^[1]

Responding to the changes brought about by industrialization, ^[2] the Progressives advocated a wide range of economic, political, social, and moral reforms.^[3] Initially the movement was successful at local levels, and then it progressed to state and gradually national. Both the reformers and their opponents were predominantly members of the middle class.

In the Gilded Age (late 19th century) the parties were reluctant to involve the federal government too heavily in the private sector, except in the area of railroads and tariffs. In general, they accepted the concept of laissez-faire, a doctrine opposing government interference in the economy except to maintain law and order. This attitude started to change during the depression of the 1890s when small business, farm, and labor movements began asking the government to intercede on their behalf.^[8]

By the turn of the century, a middle class had developed that was leery of both the business elite and the radical political movements of farmers and laborers in the Midwest and West. Known as Progressives, these people favored government regulation of business practices to, in their minds, ensure competition and free enterprise. Congress enacted a law regulating railroads in 1887 (the Interstate Commerce Act), and one preventing large firms from controlling a single industry in 1890 (the Sherman Antitrust Act). These laws were not rigorously enforced, however, until the years between 1900 and 1920, when Republican President Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909), Democratic President Woodrow Wilson (1913–1921), and others sympathetic to the views of the Progressives came to power. Many of today’s U.S. regulatory agencies were created during these years, including the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. Muckrakers were journalists who encouraged readers to demand more regulation of business. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906) showed America the horrors of the Chicago Union Stock Yards, a giant complex of meat processing that developed in the 1870s. The federal government responded to Sinclair’s book with the new regulatory Food and Drug Administration. Ida M. Tarbell wrote a series of articles against the Standard Oil monopoly. This affected both the government and the public reformers. The series helped pave the way for the breakup of the monopoly.^[9]

When Democrat Woodrow Wilson was elected President with a Democratic Congress in 1912 he implemented a series of progressive policies. In 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified, and the income tax was instituted in the United States. Wilson resolved the longstanding debates over tariffs and antitrust, and created the Federal Reserve, a complex business-government partnership that to this day dominates the financial world.

In 1913, Henry Ford, adopted the moving assembly line, with each worker doing one simple task in the production of automobiles. Taking his cue from developments during the progressive era, Ford offered a very generous wage—$5 a day—to his workers, arguing that a mass production enterprise could not survive if average workers could not buy the goods. However, the wage increase did not extend to women, and Ford expanded the company’s Sociological Department to monitor his workers and ensure that they did not spend their new found bounty on “vice and cheap thrills.”^[10]

The key to free enterprise is that all these people, whether they start a business of their own or work for someone else, do so voluntarily. By allowing people to pursue their own interests, a free enterprise system can produce phenomenal results. Money Supply Measures
The Federal Reserve publishes weekly and monthly data on two money supply measures M1 and M2. The money supply data, which the Fed reports at 4:30 p.m. every Thursday, appear in some Friday newspapers, and they are available online as well. The Fed publishes measures of large time deposits on a quarterly basis in the Flow of Funds Accounts statistical release.

The money supply measures reflect the different degrees of liquidity—or spendability—that different types of money have. The narrowest measure, M1, is restricted to the most liquid forms of money; it consists of currency in the hands of the public; travelers checks; demand deposits, and other deposits against which checks can be written. M2 includes M1, plus savings accounts, time deposits of under $100,000, and balances in retail money market mutual funds.

The chart below shows the relative sizes of the two monetary aggregates. In April 2008, M1 was approximately $1.4 trillion, more than half of which consisted of currency. While as much as two-thirds of U.S. currency in circulation may be held outside the United States, all currency held by the public is included in the money supply because it can be spent on goods and services in the U.S. economy. M2 was approximately $7.7 trillion and largely consisted of savings deposits.

“…In economics, money supply or money stock, is the total amount of money available in an economy at a particular point in time.^[1] There are several ways to define “money”, but standard measures usually include currency in circulation and demand deposits.^[2]^[3]

Money supply data are recorded and published, usually by the government or the central bank of the country. Public and private-sector analysts have long monitored changes in money supply because of its possible effects on the price level, inflation and the business cycle.^[4]

That relation between money and prices is historically associated with the quantity theory of money. There is strong empirical evidence of a direct relation between long-term price inflation and money-supply growth. These underlie the current reliance on monetary policy as a means of controlling inflation.^[5]^[6] This causal chain is however contentious, with heterodox economists arguing that the money supply is endogenous and that the sources of inflation must be found in the distributional structure of the economy.^[7]

Money is used in final settlement of a debt and as a ready store of value. Its different functions are associated with different empirical measures of the money supply. Since most modern economic systems are regulated by governments through monetary policy, the supply of money is broken down into types of money based on how much of an effect monetary policy can have on each. Narrow measures include those more directly affected by monetary policy, whereas broader measures are less closely related to monetary-policy actions.^[6] Each measure can be classified by placing it along a spectrum between narrow and broad monetary aggregates. The different types of money are typically classified as Ms. The number of Ms usually range from M0 (narrowest) to M3 (broadest) but which Ms are actually used depends on the system. The typical layout for each of the Ms is as follows:

M0: Notes and coins (currency) in circulation and in bank vaults.^[8] In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, M0 includes bank reserves, so M0 is referred to as the monetary base, or narrow money.^[9]

MB: Equals M0 + reserves which commercial banks hold in their accounts with the central bank (minimum reserves and excess reserves). MB is referred to as the monetary base or total currency.^[10] This is the base from which other forms of money (like checking deposits, listed below) are created and is traditionally the most liquid measure of the money supply. ^[11]

M1: M1 includes funds that are readily accessible for spending. M1 consists of: (1) currency outside Federal Reserve Banks, and the vaults of depository institutions; (2) traveler’s checks of nonbank issuers; (3) demand deposits; and (4) other checkable deposits (OCDs), which consist primarily of negotiable order of withdrawal (NOW) accounts at depository institutions and credit union share draft accounts. ^[12] Bank reserves are not included in M1.

M2: Equals M1 + savings deposits, time deposits less than $100,000 and money market deposit accounts for individuals. M2 represents money and “close substitutes” for money.^[13] M2 is a broader classification of money than M1. Economists use M2 when looking to quantify the amount of money in circulation and trying to explain different economic monetary conditions. M2 is a key economic indicator used to forecast inflation.^[14]

M3: Equals M2 + large time deposits, institutional money-market funds, short-term repurchase agreements, along with other larger liquid assets.^[15] M3 is no longer published or revealed to the public by the US central bank.^[16] However, it is estimated by the web site Shadow Government Statistics. ^[17]

MZM: Money with zero maturity. This measure equals M2 plus all money market funds, minus time deposits. It measures the supply of financial assets redeemable at par on demand.

Fractional-reserve banking

The different forms of money in government money supply statistics arise from the practice of fractional-reserve banking. Whenever a bank gives out a loan in a fractional-reserve banking system, a new sum of money is created. This new type of money is what makes up the non-M0 components in the M1-M3 statistics. In short, there are two types of money in a fractional-reserve banking system^[18]^[19]:

central bank money (physical currency, government money)
commercial bank money (money created through loans) – sometimes referred to as private money, or checkbook money^[20]

In the money supply statistics, central bank money is M0 while the commercial bank money is divided up into the M1-M3 components. Generally, the types of commercial bank money that tend to be valued at lower amounts are classified in the narrow category of M1 while the types of commercial bank money that tend to exist in larger amounts are categorized in M2 and M3, with M3 having the largest.

Reserves are deposits that banks have received but have not loaned out. In the USA, the Federal Reserve regulates the percentage that banks must keep in their reserves before they can make new loans. This percentage is called the minimum reserve. This means that if a person makes a deposit for $1000.00 and the bank reserve mandated by the FED is 10% then the bank must increase its reserves by $100.00 and is able to loan the remaining $900.00. The amount of money the banking system generates with each dollar of reserves is called the money multiplier, and is calculated as the reciprocal of the minimum reserve. For a reserve of 10% the money multiplier, followed by the infinite geometric series formula, is the reciprocal of 10%, which is 10. …”

Psychological projection

“…Psychological projection (or projection bias) is the unconscious act of denial of a person’s own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are ascribed to the outside world, like the weather, the government, a tool or another person or people. Projection is one of the most profound and subtle of human psychological processes, and extremely difficult to work with, because by its nature it is hidden. It is the fundamental mechanism by which we keep ourselves uninformed about ourselves. Humor has great value in any attempt to work with projection, because humor presents a forgiving posture and thereby removes the threatening nature of any inquiry into the truth.

Paleo-anthropologically speaking, this faculty probably had survival value as a self-defense mechanism when homo sapiens’ intellectual capacity to detect deception in others improved to the point that the only sure hope to deceive was for deceivers to be self-deceived and therefore behave as if they were being truthful.

One modern, radical view of projections is that they are prerequisites for normal social functioning. A person incapable of ascribing their own feelings to other people has great difficulties in understanding them. Unfortunately, human beings have done great harm laboring under the delusions of projection. This is especially true for historical cases of projection between ethnic or cultural groups, for example in Apartheid or Nazism.

In classical psychology, projection is always seen as a defense mechanism that occurs when a person’s own unacceptable or threatening feelings are repressed and then attributed to someone else.^[1]

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and redirect their libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or “projecting,” those same faults onto another.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud; for this reason, it is sometimes referred to as “Freudian Projection“^[2]^[3]

This means more spending and borrowing at a time when the Obama Administration’s budget already includes trillion-dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. Small business job creation: the findings and their critics

1. Small businesses create a vastly disproportionate share of the net new jobs in the United States. The precise share is difficult to construct for a variety of reasons, some of which are noted below. However, it is reasonable to estimate that over the past twenty-five years two-thirds of the net new jobs in the private sector originated among small firms that account for about half of total private employment.(3)

The smallest size class (1-19 employees) produces the most net new jobs relative to its share of total employment. In fact, the smallest size class is the only size class that has produced more net jobs relative to its employment share. Kirchhoff, using a somewhat different approach, calculated that small, single-establishment firms formed in just 1977-78 and their growth over the next six years created 21 percent of all net jobs produced between 1977 and 1984.(4)

3. The share of net jobs created by small (and large) businesses change from measuring period to measuring period. This variation appears closely tied to the business cycle. Larger firms expand their share of net new employment toward the end of expansions. Small businesses provide a relatively stable supply throughout. Thus, variation in shares is primarily due to variations in large firm employment practices.

4. Jobs created from small business births are about two to three times as plentiful as the number created from small business expansions.(5) This proportion seems to vary with the business cycle. Similarly, jobs lost in small businesses are primarily a function of business deaths rather than of business contractions.

“…Why is this nation headed towards a jobless recovery? Simple. It’s because our economy is undergoing a structural change that will make it more difficult for unemployed Americans to find work.

This is not the first time in our history an economic transformation has impacted the way Americans earn their livelihood. Our current economic downturn resembles the Long Depression of the 1880s, when the U.S. economy switched from farming to a manufacturing.

Although the start dates for downturns are marked by the bursting of an inflated asset bubble, other factors come together to drag down the economy. Our current economic affliction started last October, when an inflated real estate market collapsed, triggering a crash on Wall Street. Likewise, the 1873 recession started with the downfall of financier Jay Cooke, who had overinvested in railroads. The downturn that began in October 1873 lasted until March 1879, making it the longest economic contraction in our nation’s history. Economist Stanley Lebergott in his book “Manpower in Economic Growth” estimates that unemployment ranged between 12-14 percent in 1876, at the nadir of that downturn. …”

The challenge for federal and state governments will be spurring the creation of decent-paying jobs, which are as of yet unspecified. What’s required here are innovation and Yankee ingenuity, and the ability for individuals to see new market demands for products and services.”

Nothing so epitomizes President Obama’s own contempt for American values and traditions like trying to ram two bills through Congress in his first year– each bill more than a thousand pages long– too fast for either of them to be read, much less discussed. That he succeeded only the first time says that some people are starting to wake up. Whether enough people will wake up in time to keep America from being dismantled, piece by piece, is another question– and the biggest question for this generation.”

“…In 1959 Joan Baez walked out on stage at the Newport Folk Festival and touched off a wave of adulation that was to reach almost religious proportions. She became the first post-rock ‘n’ roll youth idol, the patron saint of the new folk music: Time magazine ran a rather bemused cover story on the Baez phenomenon, fans would ask for locks of her hair.

She joined the civil rights marches in the South, walking beside Martin Luther King, turned down vast financial offers, and presented a public image that was a fusion of purity and rebellion. As the ‘60s passed her music went out of fashion, but she remained venerated as a symbol of the anti-war movement. Now, 25 years later, she can’t get a record deal in America: both the music and the social conscience are out of fashion.

In Europe, Baez still commands large audiences. On Wednesday night she filled Hammersmith Odeon. It’s a popularity that owes something to ‘60s nostalgia and something to the political climate, where her anti-nuclear stand touches off a more passionate response. At Hammersmith the audience was made up of middle-aged couples and serious clean-cut young people who looked much like her earnest college-student followers of the early ‘60s. Or should it not concern us that at the G-20 conference he would push world leaders to reshape the global economy? “…Murray Newton Rothbard (March 2, 1926 – January 7, 1995) was an American intellectual, individualist anarchist,^[1] author, and economist of the Austrian School who helped define modern libertarianism and popularized a form of free-market anarchism he termed “anarcho-capitalism”.^[2]^[3] Building on the Austrian School’s concept of spontaneous order in markets, support for a free market in money production and condemnation of central planning,^[4] Rothbard sought to minimize coercive government control of the economy. “…In many ways, Chicago is still the city that Al Capone built; in today’s Chicago, the “mafia” is still raping the taxpayer and still paying off corrupt officials to look the other way, from top to bottom. For at least the last 50+ years, that “mafia” has been the exclusive domain of the Democrat “bosses”.

Not so long ago, Rahm Emanuel went to “work” for Freddie Mac–you remember them; they were one of the two organizations which almost single-handedly destroyed our economy by forcing banks to make loans to people who could not possibly pay them back. That is not “free markets”. That is abuse of power.

What the media goes out of its way NOT to tell you is that both Fannie and Freddie were run by Democrats who were being payed obscene salaries (funny, no outrage was being expressed in the Congressional witch hunts then…). Then these figurehead “regulators” in turn dutifully contributed heavily to Democrat candidates. In the mob they call this splitting up the loot.

In fact, paying Obama’s Chief of Staff $320,000 to do pretty much nothing is a perfect example of the kind of oversight the Democrats had over those agencies, try as the Republicans did to change that dynamic. Remember the name Franklin Raines?

I could go on, but you get the point; it kind of reminds me of the old days when college football players got paid hundreds of dollars by wealthy almuni for a summer job, for example maybe to water one bush in front of the stadium once per week (wink, wink…).

The Democrats are living The Godfather: destroying the economy is nothing personal; it’s just “business”. After all, if the economy had been allowed to prosper, the Democrats might never have gotten Obama (and Rahm) elected. Their core constituencies (the poor inner city welfare mother, for example) would not need them anymore were those constituencies to suddenly find wealth via initiative and hard work. In other words it can be said that–like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton–Democrats have a Vested Interest in keeping their core constituencies down. Because the minute these people become taxpayers, there would be many reasons to jump ship. The so called governmental “War on Poverty” has been going on since 1965 and LBJ’s “Great Society”. Don’t you think it is time that we bring the troops home; it has been 43 years now and from what I can see, the faster the government grows, the more the “insurgency” is winning.

“…In business as in politics, Emanuel has cultivated an aggressive, take-charge reputation that made him rich and propelled his rise to the front of the national stage. But buried deep in corporate and government documents on the Freddie Mac scandal is a little-known and very different story involving Emanuel.

He was named to the Freddie Mac board in February 2000 by Clinton, whom Emanuel had served as White House political director and vocal defender during the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals.

The board met no more than six times a year. Unlike most fellow directors, Emanuel was not assigned to any of the board’s working committees, according to company proxy statements. Immediately upon joining the board, Emanuel and other new directors qualified for $380,000 in stock and options plus a $20,000 annual fee, records indicate.

On Emanuel’s watch, the board was told by executives of a plan to use accounting tricks to mislead shareholders about outsize profits the government-chartered firm was then reaping from risky investments. The goal was to push earnings onto the books in future years, ensuring that Freddie Mac would appear profitable on paper for years to come and helping maximize annual bonuses for company brass.

The accounting scandal wasn’t the only one that brewed during Emanuel’s tenure.

During his brief time on the board, the company hatched a plan to enhance its political muscle. That scheme, also reviewed by the board, led to a record $3.8 million fine from the Federal Election Commission for illegally using corporate resources to host fundraisers for politicians. “…The emergence of Kundra is something that needs more research. There is some indication that Kundra got his jobs in Virginia after being recommended by Aneesh Chopra another professional bureaucrat in Virginia who was apparently his friend from campaign work. On one blog there is a pic of Chopra and Kundra at a boxing match with Indian bigwig Shudkaer Shenoy. The photo was taken in 2008 before either of the two men began with the Obama administration. Since then Chopra was given the job as USA Chief Technology Office (CTO).

It would be logical to assume that Kundra managed to get his buddy Chopra the CTO job despite the fact that Chopra’s technology background is essentially nil.

According to the Chopra bio he’s really never done much outside of government committee work. His academic background shows a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1997. He graduated with a B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1994. There is virtually nothing about him anywhere on the net. He has zero technology background except for perhaps using an iPOD, and he is now the country’s Chief Technology Officer.

This seems to be a team of self promoters working together. But exactly how they can be given these jobs along with responsibility for actual technology decisions that involve billions of US taxpayer dollars is incredible. And if Kundra has indeed pumped up his bio with BS, then what does that say about the Obama administration in general. After all, this guy was highly promoted by Obama himself. …”

The Federal CTO will be an assistant to the President, as well as the Associate Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He will work closely with Vivek Kundra, the recently-named Federal CIO, to develop and implement the President’s ambitious technology agenda.

According to one background document I was given access to, the White House describes the relationship between the CIO and CTO roles as follows:

The responsibilities of the CIO are to use information technology to transform the ways in which the government does business. The CTO will develop national strategies for using advanced technologies to transform our economy and our society, such as fostering private sector innovation, reducing administrative costs and medical errors using health IT, and using technology to change the way teachers teach and students learn.

Some in Silicon Valley have hoped for one of their own, a CTO with a deep technology pedigree and ties to the technology industry. For example, the Techcrunch coverage leads with the title Obama Spurns Silicon Valley. This is a narrow view.

In the best relationships I have formed, I had no idea how I was forming them! It’s the extra phone call on someone’s behalf, or the email you send, or the interview you offer. Two, I believe very deeply about the force of ideas. In networking, if you acknowledge that ideas matter, when you talk to people, you will look at them to identify the brilliant ideas that are embedded in your mind. I don’t care if you’re a basket weaver or a philosopher, often getting to know someone’s force of ideas in one area can naturally translate into another. The nation’s largest ISPs, including AT&T, Time Warner, Verizon, Cox Communications Inc. and Comcast, are the strongest network-neutrality opponents. Yet these firms steadfastly deny that they are trying to hijack the Internet, as some as their critics claim.

The ISPs insist that their primary interest is simply to ensure better and more reliable service by prioritizing content to meet their customers’ needs. They also state that their actions are essential to comprehensive Internet security; they must prevent outlaw services from taking advantage of customers through illegal Net activities, such as phishing sites and intellectual-property-robbing peer-to-peer file-sharing services. Many neutrality opponents also believe they should be able to charge Web-site operators, especially high-bandwidth services like video streamers, for the right to use the ISP’s portion of the network, which feeds content directly to customers.

Neutrality opponents assert that any government measures directed at promoting a so-called “even playing field” would unnecessarily meddle with Net activities and, in effect, place the government in charge of critical aspects of the Web’s design and operation. Such interference, opponents claim, would stifle Internet growth, hinder the roll out of broadband access and tilt the market toward businesses that use the most bandwidth yet pay the least for network costs within a neutral environment.

The Case for Network Neutrality

Supporters of network neutrality include the businesses that have the most to gain from a neutral Internet — companies such as Amazon.com, Google, Yahoo! Inc., Microsoft and Facebook. Also backing the cause are the editorial boards of several major newspapers, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News. Organizations such as the American Library Association, Gun Owners of America, Christian Coalition of America and Consumers Union, as well as Internet pioneer Vint Cerf, are also carrying the “free Internet” banner.

Network-neutrality proponents claim that rather than protecting their customers’ interests, ISPs are trying to squash competition in order to benefit their own Internet services, including email, IP telephony, search technology, news and information content aggregation, classified advertising, and social networking. They argue that by attempting to monopolize both access and content, such firms are essentially “double-dipping.”

According to network-neutrality advocates, the loss of a free and open Internet would lead to less innovation, since individuals and small startups buckle under new service and cost restrictions imposed by ISPs. The biggest losers in this situation will be consumers, who will inevitably face fewer service choices and higher fees, argue neutrality supporters. The national business and financial climate will also suffer, they allege, as Internet innovation and growth slows. …”

“…He began comedy routines and acting while studying at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He was also a local radio personality on WING (mornings, 6 to 8) in Dayton, Ohio and at WIZE in Springfield, Ohio. He performed as Johnny Winters on WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio for two years, quitting the station in 1953 when they refused him a $5.00 raise. After promising his wife that he would return to Dayton if he did not make it in a year, and with $56.36 in his pocket, he moved to New York City, staying with friends in Greenwich Village. After obtaining Martin Goodman as his agent, he began stand-up routines in various New York nightclubs. His big break occurred (with the revised name of Jonathan) when he worked for Alistair Cooke on the CBS Sunday morning show Omnibus.^[3] In 1957, he performed in the first color television show, a 15-minute routine sponsored by Tums.^[4]

As a stand-up comic with a madcap wildness, Winters recorded many classic comedy albums for the Verve Records label, starting in 1960. Probably the best-known of his characters from this period is Maude Frickert, the seemingly sweet old lady with the barbed tongue. He was a favorite of Jack Paar and appeared frequently on his television programs. In addition, he would often appear on the The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, usually in the guise of some character. Carson often did not know what Winters had planned and usually had to tease out the character’s back story during a pretend interview.

Winters has appeared in nearly 50 movies and several television shows, including particularly notable roles in the film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and in the dual roles of Henry Glenworthy and his dark, scheming brother, the Rev. Wilbur Glenworthy, in the film adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s The Loved One. Fellow comedians who starred with him in “Mad World,” such as Arnold Stang, claimed that in the long periods while they waited between scenes, Winters would entertain them for hours in their trailer by becoming any character that they would suggest to him.

On television, in the late sixties, he appeared as a regular (along with Woody Allen and Jo Anne Worley) on the Saturday morning children’s program Hot Dog. In the seventies, he appeared in his own show, The Wacky World of Jonathan Winters (1972–74). Winters has also done some dramatic work, as evidenced in The Twilight Zone episode “A Game of Pool” (episode #3.5, October 13, 1961). He recorded Ogden Nash’s The Carnival of the Animals poems to Camille Saint-Saëns’ classical opus. He also made an appearance on a Dean Martin Comedy Roast. Winters appeared on ABC’s The American Sportsman, hosted by Grits Gresham, who took celebrities on hunting, fishing, and shooting trips to exotic places around the world. Winters also appeared regularly as a panelist on The Hollywood Squares.

In the fourth and last season of the sci-fi-based TV comedy Mork & Mindy, Jonathan Winters (one of Robin Williams’ idols) was brought in as Mork & Mindy’s child, Mearth. Due to the different Orkan physiology, Mork laid an egg, which grew and hatched into the much older Winters. It had been previously explained that Orkans aged “backwards,” thus explaining Mearth’s appearance and that of his teacher, Miss Geespot (portrayed by then-11-year-old actress Luanne). Mork’s infant son Mearth in Mork & Mindy was created in hopes of improving ratings and as an attempt to capitalize on Williams’ comedic talents. Winters had previously guest-starred in Season 3, Episode 18 as Dave McConnell, Mindy’s uncle. Although Robin Williams calls Jonathan Winters his greatest influence, the idea of Mearth didn’t work, and the show was soon canceled, in 1982.

He was a regular on Hee Haw during the 1983–84 season. Shortly after this, in 1987, Winters was featured in NFL Films’ The NFL TV Follies.

In 1991 and 1992, he was on Davis Rules, a sitcom that lasted two seasons (25 episodes). He played Gunny Davis, an eccentric grandfather who was helping raise his grandchildren after his son had lost his wife. In addition to his live action roles, he was also a guest star on The New Scooby-Doo Movies as a sweet old lady who was really the villain, and he was the narrator in Frosty Returns. Winters had also earlier appeared as himself on an episode of Scooby-Doo, where the Scooby Gang was looking forward to his promised performance as Maude Frickert. Along with numerous roles in Scooby-Doo, Winters also provided the voice for the thief in The Thief and the Cobbler (Miramax version).

From 1959 to 1964, Winters’ voice could be heard in a series of popular television commercials for Utica Club beer. In the ads, he provided the voices of talking beer steins, named “Shultz and Dooley.” Later, he became a spokesman for Hefty brand trash bags, for whom he appeared as a dapper garbageman known for collecting “gahr-bahj,” as well as Maude Frickert and other characters.^{[5] …”}

He now lives near Santa Barbara, California, and is often seen browsing and hamming for the crowd at the antique show on the Ventura County fairgrounds. He often entertains the tellers and other workers whenever he visits his local bank to make a deposit or withdrawal. He spends time painting, and has been presented in one-man shows of his art. In 1987, he published Winters’ Tales: Stories and Observations for the Unusual. Other writings have followed, and he is said to be working on his autobiography.

The Doctor Fix Is In

Adding lots of ‘dimes’ to the deficit.

“…Later this week, or maybe next, Senate Democrats plan to vote on a stand-alone bill that strips a formula that automatically cuts Medicare physician payments out of “comprehensive” health reform. Rather than include the pricey $247 billion plan known on Capitol Hill as the “doc fix” as part of ObamaCare, they’ll instead make this a separate contribution to the deficit, without compensating tax increases or spending cuts. Majority Leader Harry Reid explained at a press conference last week that “All we’re doing is wiping the slate clean by adjusting the baseline to what is current policy. This is not new policy.”

Wiping the slate is right.

It’s true that Congress likes to pretend that the “sustainable growth rate,” or SGR, is real. Created in 1997, the SGR slashes Medicare reimbursements if costs rise too steeply, as they always do. In January, doctors fees are scheduled to fall by 21.5%, and 40% over the next five years. That would force many doctors to stop seeing Medicare patients, so Congress intervenes every year and temporarily overrides the cuts.

The American Medical Association’s asking price for supporting ObamaCare is scrapping the SGR. House Democrats did just that, but it pushed the total cost of their bill above $1 trillion, a political red line. The Senate Finance Committee chose the subterfuge of fixing the problem for only one year, which is how Chairman Max Baucus could claim he had done the miracle-work of designing an entitlement that reduces the deficit over 10 years. The AMA wasn’t pacified. …”

On 14 November 2008 it was announced that President-elect Barack Obama has selected Susan Crawford and Werbach to lead the review of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).^[2] The review team “will ensure that senior appointees have the information necessary to complete the confirmation process, lead their departments, and begin implementing signature policy initiatives immediately after they are sworn in.”^[3]

Werbach’s areas of interest are emerging internet technologies, telecommunications policy, electronic commerce, wireless communication, and regulation. He advises major information technology and communications companies on strategic business and policy implications of emerging technologies. At The Wharton School Werbach is currently working in the areas of evolving Internet architecture policy implications, regulation of Internet video, next-generation broadband access, and decentralized communications, computing, and media business implications.^[4]

Werbach holds a JD from Harvard Law School (1994) and a BA from the University of California at Berkeley (1991).^[4]

Werbach was founder of the Supernova Group (2002-Present), editor of Release 1.0 (1998-2002), and Counsel for New Technology Policy at the Federal Communications Commission (1994-1998). Werbach has also served on the Board of Directors of the TPRC Research Conference on Communication, Information and Internet Policy (2003-Present), is a Fellow at the Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan (2002-Present), and sat on the Advisory Board of Knowledge@Wharton (2005-Present), Public Knowledge (2002-Present) and Socialtext (2003-Present).^[4]

Carl Davidson is an American Marxist who serves as a national steering committee member of United for Peace and Justice, a field organizer for the Solidarity Economy Network, and co-chair of Chicagoans Against War & Injustice. The latter organization has formed alliances with such groups as the League of Women Voters, Rainbow/PUSH, Citizen Action, People for the American Way, the Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Aiming ultimately to transform the United States into a socialist nation, Davidson advocates the mobilization of “new grassroots majorities required for progressive, systemic change.”

As a college student in the 1960s, Davidson was a national secretary of Students of a Democratic Society and a national leader of the anti-Vietnam War movement. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Penn State University and later found employment as a philosophy instructor at the University of Nebraska, also in the 1960s.

Davidson and Tom Hayden take credit for having launched in 1969 the “Venceremos Brigades,” which covertly transported hundreds of young Americans to Cuba to help harvest sugar cane and interact with Havana’s communist revolutionary leadership. (The Brigades were organized by Fidel Castro’s Cuban intelligence agency, which trained “brigadistas” in guerrilla warfare techniques, including the use of arms and explosives.)

Many years later, Davidson would reflect on his SDS days when he, along with Dave Dellinger and Tom Hayden, had taken advantage of an opportunity to converse at length with President Castro. Said Davidson: “He [Castro] is a remarkable man, with a photographic memory, wide knowledge and keen insights…. We should all wish Fidel and Cuba well, and double our voices against the blockcade.”

In 1988 Davidson founded Networking for Democracy (NFD), an initiative that teaches computer skills and radical politics to Chicago-area teenagers. The NFD program encourages students to engage in “mass action” aimed at “tearing down the old structures of race and class privilege” in the U.S. “and around the world.”

In 1992 Davidson became a leader of the newly formed Committees of Correspondence, a Marxist coalition of former Maoists, Trotskyists, and Communist Party USA members. The organization has since changed its name to the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism, where Davidson remains a prominent figure.

In the mid-1990s Davidson was a major player in the Chicago branch of the New Party, a Marxist political coalition whose objective was to endorse and elect leftist public officials. Most New Party members hailed from the Committees of Correspondence (the Marxist coalition cited in the preceding paragraph), the Democratic Socialists of America, and the militant leftist organization ACORN. Davidson first met Barack Obama through the New Party, which endorsed the latter in his run for the Illinois state senate in 1996. Obama had actively sought this endorsement, and he used a number of New Party volunteers as campaign workers.

Davidson quickly became one of Obama’s most ardent political supporters. He helped organize a large 2002 rally where Obama first established himself as an eloquent anti-war spokesman.

A longtime admirer of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Davidson views the Iraq War as an endeavor rooted in American imperialism and “racism.” In June 2004 he endorsed John Kerry for U.S. President and condemned “the Bush administration’s ill-conceived ‘War on Terror’ [the sneer quotes are Davidson’s], its drive to an unjust war with Iraq, and … the ongoing brutal occupation of that country.” Blaming “Bush’s unilateralist, militaristic approach” for having “lost the battle for hearts and minds … in the Islamic world,” he accused the President of using the professed goal of “expanding democracy” as “a cover for U.S. hegemonism and Empire.”

In Davis’ view, “[T]he U.S government, at least over the past 50 years, has been the chief terrorist and sponsor of terrorism in the world. We can never forget that our government has the blood of a million Vietnamese on its hands.” …”

Senior Obama administration officials took to the airwaves Sunday to accuse Fox News of pushing a particular point of view, one week after the administration fired its initial salvo to try to isolate the news network by accusing it of being a GOP mouthpiece.

“A lot of their news programming, it’s really not news. It’s pushing a point of view,” senior adviser David Axelrod said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“The way we — the president looks at it and we look at it, is, it is not a news organization so much as it has a perspective,” White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel added on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The open assault on Fox News began last weekend when White House Communications Director Anita Dunn accused the network of being a “wing of the Republican Party.”

“What I think is fair to say about Fox — and certainly it’s the way we view it — is that it really is more a wing of the Republican Party,” Dunn said on CNN. “They take their talking points, put them on the air; take their opposition research, put them on the air. And that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re a news network the way CNN is.”

Despite calls to the White House this week, the administration did not offer a guest for this weekend’s “Fox News Sunday” to talk about Dunn’s comments, although administration officials appeared on all four Sunday morning shows to speak on various issues.

President Obama has had interviews with all of the other Sunday talk shows except “Fox News Sunday,” including a whirlwind weekend in late September where he appeared on all other Sunday talk shows. …”

What is Narcissistic Supply?

Answer:

We all search for positive cues from people around us. These cues reinforce in us certain behaviour patterns. There is nothing special in the fact that the narcissist does the same. However there are two major differences between the narcissistic and the normal personality.

The first is quantitative. The normal person is likely to welcome a moderate amount of attention – verbal and non-verbal – in the form of affirmation, approval, or admiration. Too much attention, though, is perceived as onerous and is avoided. Destructive and negative criticism is avoided altogether.

The narcissist, in contrast, is the mental equivalent of an alcoholic. He is insatiable. He directs his whole behaviour, in fact his life, to obtain these pleasurable titbits of attention. He embeds them in a coherent, completely biased, picture of himself. He uses them to regulates his labile sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

To elicit constant interest, he projects to others a confabulated, fictitious version of himself, known as the False Self. The False Self is everything the narcissist is not: omniscient, omnipotent, charming, intelligent, rich, or well-connected.

The narcissist then proceeds to harvest reactions to this projected image from family members, friends, co-workers, neighbours, business partners and from colleagues. If these – the adulation, admiration, attention, fear, respect, applause, affirmation – are not forthcoming, the narcissist demands them, or extorts them. Money, compliments, a favourable critique, an appearance in the media, a sexual conquest are all converted into the same currency in the narcissist’s mind.

This currency is what I call Narcissistic Supply.

It is important to distinguish between the various components of the process of narcissistic supply:

1. The trigger of supply is the person or object that provokes the source into yielding narcissistic supply by confronting the source with information about the narcissist’s False Self.

2. The source of narcissistic supply is the person that provides the narcissistic supply

3. Narcissistic supply is the reaction of the source to the trigger.

Publicity (celebrity or notoriety, being famous or being infamous) is a trigger of narcissistic supply because it provokes people to pay attention to the narcissist (in other words, it moves sources to provide the narcissist with narcissistic supply). Publicity can be obtained by exposing oneself, by creating something, or by provoking attention. The narcissist resorts to all three repeatedly (as drug addicts do to secure their daily dose). A mate or a companion is one such source of narcissistic supply.

But the picture is more complicated. There are two categories of Narcissistic Supply and their Sources (NSS):

The Primary Narcissistic Supply is attention, in both its public forms (fame, notoriety, infamy, celebrity) and its private, interpersonal, forms (adoration, adulation, applause, fear, repulsion). It is important to understand that attention of any kind – positive or negative – constitutes Primary Narcissistic Supply. Infamy is as sought after as fame, being notorious is as good as being renowned.

To the narcissist his “achievements” can be imaginary, fictitious, or only apparent, as long as others believe in them. Appearances count more than substance, what matters is not the truth but its perception.

Triggers of Primary Narcissistic Supply include, apart from being famous (celebrity, notoriety, fame, infamy) – having an air of mystique (when the narcissist is considered to be mysterious), having sex and deriving from it a sense of masculinity/virility/femininity, and being close or connected to political, financial, military, or spiritual power or authority or yielding them. …”

“…Hot Stuff singer Donna Summer died this morning aged 63 after a battle with cancer, her family has confirmed.

The Boston-born star, known as the Queen of Disco, passed away in Florida.

The Seventies icon was battling lung cancer, TMZ is reporting, with sources telling the website Donna believed she contracted the illness by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.

Her family released a statement, saying Summer died on Thursday morning

It went on: ‘Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time.’

She had been living in Englewood, Florida, with her husband Bruce Sudano.

The singer will be remembered at a public memorial in Nashville, Tennessee next Wednesday.

Sources told TMZ she had attempted to keep the extent of her illness from fans and was recently trying to finish up her latest album.

According to Entertainment

ET also reports she will be laid to rest in Nashville on Monday following her funeral.

Summers, real name LaDonna Gaines, is best know for her string of 70s hits, including I Feel Love, Last Dance and Bad Girls.

She was a five-time Grammy Award winner and the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard chart.

She was also the first female artist with four No. 1 singles in a 13-month period, according to the Rock Hall of Fame, where she was a nominee this year.

Summer came to prominence just as disco was burgeoning, and came to define the era with a string of No. 1 hits and her beauty queen looks.

Disco became as much defined by her sultry, sexual vocals – her bedroom moans and sighs – as the relentless, pulsing rhythms of the music itself.

Summers married actor Helmuth Sommer in 1973 before giving birth to the couple’s daughter Mimi later that year.

Although the marriage crumbled in 1975, she kept an altered version of her ex’s surname to use as her stage name. She married Brooklyn Dreams musician Bruce Sudano in 1980 and the couple went on to have two daughters, Brooklyn, born in 1981 and Amanda the following year.

In 1994, the family moved from Los Angeles to Nashville where Donna took time out from showbusiness to focus on painting but had recently returned to the recording studio.

As well has staggering career highs, Summer also endured personal lows.

She suffered serious depression in the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks in New York.

‘I was really freaked out by the horrific experiences of that day,’ Summer, who was at her Manhattan apartment during the 2001 attacks, once said.

‘I couldn’t go out, I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I had to keep the blinds down and stay in my bedroom.’

Friends eventually intervened and the born-again Christian also found strength in her faith. …”
