The President of The United States of America is bringing the Chicago way to Washington D.C. along with the corruption and cronyism.
The big winners will be Chicago real estate developers and lawyers and the Chicago Democratic Party.
Who ends up paying the bills for projects that go over-budget–the American taxpayer.
No Federal tax revenues should go to any American city that sponsors the Olympic Games.
Why?–They usually end up going over budget by billions of dollars.

Chicagoans of all political stripes who oppose massive government funding of Mayor Richard Daley’s pet project have inundated my email-box. Reader Will P. sums it all up by noting that the games would “protect the current corrupt structure” and paper over Chicago/Illinois’s myriad woes, including: “Governor after Governor going to jail. Pay to play schemes. Crumbling and outdated infrastructure. Deteriorating public housing. Failing, dumbing-down schools. Hospital cutbacks. Sanctuary city. Never-ending gang wars (outbursts every Spring requiring massive police presence, police outmanned at the Taste of Chicago, innocents shot in the crossfire weekly, current beating video out now). Not quite sure where to start with your argument, but I’ll make the following points:
It’s been estimated that a Chicago olympics would create nearly 300,000 jobs. This would be everything from construction of the venues to travel/hospitality workers, etc. So, by getting the Olympics, Obama would be helping to reduce the amount of unemployment in the country’s 3rd largest metro area.
Also, not sending federal funds to something because it goes overbudget is extremely short sighted. How many military projects go over budget? Cash for clunkers, the best stimulus project so far, went over budget, and was paid with federal dollars. Highway projects go over budget. How would you suggest we fund the military and the highways? Federal funds would go to infrastructure improvements (like roads and public transport), not to new stadiums. That would likely come from the state and private funds.
Lastly, this bid has been in before Obama was even elected Senator. Saying that it’s his “gift” to the Daley machine assumes that Daley had the foresight to see that Obama would not only be elected Senator, but also win the Democratic party nomination for president, win the general election, AND that the IOC would still be considering the Chicago bid by 2009. Somehow, I don’t even think Daley is THAT psychic.
