Conservative savior of UK’s economy, Margaret Thatcher dead at 87

No one, thank heavens, is like anyone else, however much the Socialists may pretend otherwise. We believe that everyone has the right to be unequal but to us every human being is equally important.”

Ceremonial funeral services with military honors for Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, known as Maggie to her friends and “the Iron Lady” to her opponents, will be held this Wednesday at St Paul’s Cathedral, according to Prime Minister David Cameron’s office.

Her legacy was to change her country’s dominant ideology from collectivist state socialism implemented in decades of Labour Party policies to an individualist market capitalism implemented in Conservative Party policies. In the process she returned the U.K. to eight years of economic growth and prosperity in the 1980s.

Thatcher supported President Ronald Reagan and the United States in defeating communism in the Soviet Union and winning the Cold War.

Thatcher had been in declining health for a number of years and died peacefully in her sleep the morning of April 8 following a stroke.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said of Thatcher, “As our first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds and the real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn’t just lead our country, she saved our country, and I believe she’ll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister.”

President Barack Obama said, “The world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty and America has lost a true friend.” Obama said she had taught “our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can’t be shattered.”

John Boehner, speaker of the house, said, “The greatest peacetime prime minister in British history is dead. Margaret Thatcher, a grocer’s daughter, stared down elites, union bosses and communists to win three consecutive elections, establish conservative principles in Western Europe and bring down the Iron Curtain. There was no secret to her values – hard work and personal responsibility – and no nonsense in her leadership.”

Nancy Reagan, widow of former President Ronald Reagan said: “Ronnie and Margaret were political soul mates, committed to freedom and resolved to end Communism. As Prime Minister, Margaret had the clear vision and strong determination to stand up for her beliefs at a time when so many were afraid to ‘rock the boat.’ As a result, she helped to bring about the collapse of the Soviet Union and the liberation of millions of people.”

In 1975 Thatcher was elected leader of the Conservative Party. She was subsequently elected prime minister of the United Kingdom on May 4, 1979. Thatcher served three terms from 1979 to 1990 becoming Britain’s longest-serving prime minister in over a century as well as the most dynamic, inspirational and controversial.

When Thatcher took office, the British economy was in shambles and in recession, inflation was rising and the government faced possible bankruptcy. This was a direct result of many years of Labour Party socialistic policies of out-of-control government spending, confiscatory taxation and the nationalization or state control of many industries including coal, steel, railways, gas, electricity, water, trucking, airlines and telecommunications.

The writings of Austrian economist and political philosopher, Friedrick A. Hayek, winner of the 1973 Nobel Prize in Economics, in particular his book, “The Road to Serfdom”, inspired and guided Thatcher’s economic policies.

Thatcher turned the economy around and made Britain governable again by taking on and taming the trade unions with labor reform legislation. No longer were the unions able to dictate the nation’s economic policies. Under Thatcher the British government pursued a policy of selling state assets with privatization of industry, thus reversing the Labour Party’s nationalization of industry.

When the Argentina government under the fascist junta invaded the British protectorate of the Falkland Islands in April 1982, she led the U.K. to victory. The Argentinians soon toppled the military junta.

In October 1984 there was an assassination attempt on her life when a hotel in Brighton where she and her husband and other members of her cabinet were staying was bombed by Irish Republican Army (IRA) terrorists.

Thatcher supported Reagan in opposing communism and confronting the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union. She was instrumental in the introduction of cruise missiles in Britain to counter the Soviet military threat. She allied the United Kingdom with the United States against the communist expansion and subversion in the West and the winning of the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

An excellent multi-part documentary about Thatcher produced in 2008 by the conservative paper, The Daily Telegraph, can be viewed on YouTube as well as an entertaining movie about her early political career titled, “Margaret Thatcher – The Long Walk to Finchley.”

Her husband of more than 50 years, Denis Thatcher, died in June 2003. She is survived by her twin son, Mark, and daughter, Carol, born in 1953.

Thatcher remains a controversial figure in Britain. She was loved and revered by many as well as loathed and reviled by some. She will be remembered by all who value economic freedom and individual liberty.

“…Friedrich August von Hayek CH (8 May 1899 – 23 March 1992), was an Austrian-born economist and philosopher known for his defence of classical liberalism and free-market capitalism against socialist and collectivist thought. He is considered by some to be one of the most important economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century.[1] Hayek’s account of how changing prices communicate signals which enable individuals to coordinate their plans is widely regarded as an important achievement in economics.[2] Hayek also wrote on the topics of jurisprudence, neuroscience and the history of ideas.

Hayek is one of the most influential members of the Austrian School of economics, and in 1974 shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for his “pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and [his] penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena.”[3] He also received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 from president George H. W. Bush.[4]

Hayek lived in Austria, Great Britain, the United States and Germany, and became a British subject in 1938. He spent most of his academic life at the LSE, the University of Chicago, and the University of Freiburg. …”

To Create Jobs, Voters Say Cut Taxes and Stop Spending

“…As the policy debate has unfolded in Washington this year, voters have consistently believed that tax cuts would do more than increased government spending to stimulate the economy and create jobs. Now that the nation’s unemployment rate has reached 10.2%, voters continue to hold that view.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 62% believe tax cuts are a better way to create jobs and fight unemployment. Only 21% believe that additional stimulus spending is a more effective tool. Earlier this year, as the first stimulus package was being debated in Congress, 62% of voters wanted the plan to have more tax cuts and less spending.

Given a different choice today, 51% believe canceling the rest of the stimulus money would create more jobs while 32% say spending the money would be the better approach to job creation. These findings are consistent with earlier polling. Most Americans say that, generally speaking, increased government spending is bad for the economy.  Earlier this year, before the unemployment rate had reached its current highs, 45% wanted to cancel the rest of the stimulus spending while just 36% disagreed. …”

EDITORIAL: National debt projections should be wake up call for our lawmakers

“…This week both the White House and nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office issued reports painting a bleak portrait of our economy, not just for ourselves, not just for our children but for our grandchildren. The stunningly grim $9 trillion, 10-year national debt forecast, as far as we’re concerned, would seem to preclude any further discussions about adding yet another trillion or so dollars for health care reform, especially if it includes a public option. A recent poll indicates more than half of our nation opposes such legislation, especially if it means more debt.

While much of the deficit spending the next few years is caught up in recent spending such as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act approved under President Barack Obama and earlier Wall Street bailouts approved under President George W. Bush, consider this: Much of the debt piling up after 2013 involves the rising costs inherent in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as baby boomers retire to their expected rewards.

How on earth can this be the time to add another entitlement program? Does anyone really believe the government’s claim that health care reform will pay for itself, especially when Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid almost certainly will force an overhaul of those programs and/or significantly higher taxes for most Americans? …”

But the fiscal package now before Congress needs to be thoroughly revised. In its current form, it does too little to raise national spending and employment. It would be better for the Senate to delay legislation for a month, or even two, if that’s what it takes to produce a much better bill. We cannot afford an $800 billion mistake. …”

During 1933 the worse year of the Great Depression, there were about 13,000,000 Americans seeking full time employment.

Today the number of unemployed Americans is over twice that number.

The  “stimulus bill” is largely more government spending and more government debt, one of the causes of the economic crisis.

The stimulus bill is a continuation of the problem not a solution.

We the people must regain confidence in the future of the US economy.

Businesses can create wealth and jobs provided the Federal government would just get out of the way.

We the people need another plan or course of action, call it the American People’s Plan–6 Month Tax Holiday and The FairTax.   

For the first and second quarters of 2010 (January 1 through June 30, 2009) give all individuals and businesses a six month tax holiday from Federal income taxes, payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare taxes), and capital gains taxes.

For individuals this means their gross pay will not have any deductions for income and payroll taxes.

This means an individual’s gross pay will equal their actual pay.

FairTax for America

The sixth month period will be used to prepare businesses and the Federal Government for the change over from a Federal tax based on income to a Federal tax based on consumption– the FairTax.

What is the FairTax plan?

The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.

The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 296) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax  administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.

The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.

The FairTax:

  • Enables workers to keep their entire paychecks
  • Enables retirees to keep their entire pensions
  • Refunds in advance the tax on purchases of basic necessities
  • Allows American products to compete fairly
  • Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
  • Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
  • Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
  • Abolishes the IRS

In 2006, Wu wrote “The World Trade Law of Internet Filtering”, which analyzed the possibility of the World Trade Organization treating censorship as a barrier to trade.[13] In June 2007, when Google Inc. lobbied the United States Trade Representative to pursue a complaint against China’s censorship at the WTO, Wu’s paper was cited as a “likely source” for this idea.[14] In 2006 Wu was also invited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help draft the first network neutrality rules attached to the AT&T and BellSouth merger.[15]

In 2007, Wu published a paper proposing a “Wireless Carterfone” rule for mobile phone networks[16]; the rule was adopted by the Federal Communications Commission for the 700 MHz spectrum auctions on July 31, 2007, with FCC Commissioner Michael Copps stating: “I find it extremely heartening to see that an academic paper—in this case by Professor Timothy Wu of Columbia Law School—can have such an immediate and forceful influence on policy.”[17] In November 2007 BusinessWeek credited Wu with providing “the intellectual framework that inspired Google’s mobile phone strategy.”[18]

Green Jobs: Fast-tracking Economic Suicide

“…Creating ex nihilo — literally, out of nothing — used to be a theological concept, God’s prerogative. Today it seems, President Barack Obama and certain Western politicians claim to possess the ability to do it. Against all the laws of economics and the marketplace, they believe they can create millions of ‘green’ real jobs, out of thin air, or at least air without carbon dioxide, via cap and trade.  

If Obama & Co. were to remove their green-tinted glasses for just a moment and take a long hard look at the European experience they profess to cite as ‘proven’, they would discover those glasses have been rose-tinted all along.

The basic assumption is that technology per se generates jobs. Mostly, it does not. Rather, technology enables jobs — real and sustainable jobs — based on how useful the technology is to the marketplace.  To generate real industrial jobs, however, one needs a basic commodity to trade, and in the energy business this has meant oil, gas or coal.  Yet ‘green’ politicians and eco-lobbyists expect to create a revolution in green jobs based on … alternative energy sources.  The trouble is that alternative energy sources remain and will continue to be appallingly inefficient, offering a very poor to mostly negative return on investment. Cut off the flow of massive public subsidies and the alternative energy industrial revolution would grind to a halt tomorrow — as the European experience already bears out.

What the EU experience shows is that for every green job created per installed MW power, a real job is destroyed elsewhere in the economy. Not to mention, it aids the reduction of competitiveness, investment in expansion and, ultimately, promotes the relocation of major companies to countries without draconian carbon regimes that cause energy price hikes. …”

During his tenure with STORM, Jones collaborated on numerous projects (including antiwar demonstrations) with local activist Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, who served as a “mentor” for members of the Ella Baker Center. Martinez was a longtime Maoist who went on to join the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS), a Communist Party USA splinter group, in the early 1990s. To this day, Martinez continues to sit on the CCDS advisory board alongside such luminaries as Angela Davis, Timuel Black (who served on Barack Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign committee), and musician Pete Seeger. Martinez is also a board member of the Movement for a Democratic Society, the parent organization of Progressives for Obama. Martinez and Van Jones together attended a “Challenging White Supremacy” workshop which advanced the theme that “all too often, the unconscious racism of white activists stands in the way of any effective, worthwhile collaboration” with blacks.

STORM worked with known communist leaders. It led the charge in black protests against various issues, including a local attempt to pass Proposition 21, a ballot initiative that sought to increase the penalties for violent crimes and require more juvenile offenders to be tried as adults.

Many movement conservatives and libetarians that in the past voted Republican have decided that both political parties no longer represent the interests of the American people.

Both political parties are enlarging the scope and size government–more government spending, taxes, debt and regulations:

Instead of truly cutting the number of Federal Government Departments, budgets, programs, and taxes–both parties want to expand them.

The individual and family are under attack by more and more government at the local, state, and Federal level.

Government growth has become a cancer that needs to be stopped.

More and more I am convinced that a third party based on limited government would be successful in getting both Republican and Democratic voters as well as independents as party members.

It will take ten to twenty years or more to organize and win a majority of the voters.

Several conservative and libertarian talk show hosts have in the past worked in Republican administrations.

These talk show hosts are married to the Republican Party and want no part of a new conservative/libertarian fusion party of American citizens.

Unfortunately, the glory golden days of Senator Barry Goldwater and President Reagan are long gone, but not forgotten.

Most conservatives and libertarians have no desire to work in any administration, Republican or Democratic.

Trying to change the Republican Party leadership is of no interest to them.

Movement conservatives and libertarians did change the leadership of the Republican Party in 1964.

Then waited another 16 years before Ronald Reagan was finally elected.

Let the supporters of Rockefeller, Bush and McCain–moderates and liberals–keep the Republican Party.

Instead, a new party that runs on conservative and libertarian principles and delivers on them would win my vote.

A new party whatever the name will arise from a grassroot movement of individuals that favor limited government, massive cuts in spending, lower taxes, fewer regulations, ending illegal immigration  and starting criminal alien removal, individual ownership accounts for Social Security, bringing all the troops home from around the world, universal education vouchers to promote competition with government schools,  and yes, The FairTax!

Neither the Democrats nor Republicans support such initiatives–most of them actually oppose most if not all of them.

There is a need for leaders that can communicate ideas and organize a grassroots movement.

There is also a need for financial backers that can supply the money to fund the party building activities and political campaigns.

A leader that is a combination of Ronald Reagan and George Marshall backed by a Bill Gates would fit the profile. 

Leaders must be thinkers and communicators and not just readers of prepared speeches.

Remember Ronald Reagan read and understood the works of the great economists Ludwig von Mises, Friederick Hayek and Milton Friedman:

The Tea Party American People from both political parties are the core base of a new political party in the United States.

These individuals are throughly disgusted with the fiscally irresponsible Democratic and Republican Parties who put the needs of the government bureaucracy and political elites before the needs and aspirations of the American people.

Many Democrats, Republicans and Independents are demanding a party of principles where God and family are first and government is limited and tertiary.

An alliance of American Citizens– former Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Independents– would win in a landslide exceeding those of President Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

The time for an American conservative and libertarian party is now!

California Sagging

The state’s crisis has been causedby “moderation,” understood as splitting the difference between extreme liberalism and hyperliberalism, a “reasonableness” that merely moderates the speed at which the ever-expanding public sector suffocates the private sector.

California has become liberalism’s laboratory, in which the case for fiscal conservatism is being confirmed. The state is a slow learner and hence will remain a drag on the nation’s economy. But it will be a net benefit to the nation if the federal government and other state governments profit from California’s negative example, which Californians can make more vividly instructive by voting down the propositions on May 19.

Remember the story of the mule that paid attention only after being walloped by a two-by-four? The Democratic-controlled state Legislature is like that. Fortunately, it has handed voters some two-by-fours — the initiatives. Resounding rejections of them should get Sacramento’s attention. …”

President Obama and His Keynesian Spending Cult of The Fascist Democrat Radicals–FDRs

President Obama’s ignorance of economics and business history is stunning and is only matched by his arrogance in recommending a stimulus package and bailouts that will not work and will within two years lead to inflation rates from 25%-50%. 

President Obama is destined to be a repeat of the Carter years, only much worse.

Any Democrat or Republican that votes for the stimulus package and future bailouts of banks, businesses, and states will rue the day that they failed to listen to those warning them that you do not know what you are doing–wrecking the US economy and destroying  jobs.

If that is the real agenda of the FDRs  they may succeed for a while.

The American people will remember in 2010 and 2012 and will vote out of office all those Democrats and Republicans that voted for this so-called stimulus package and future bailout bills.

The unemployment rate will hit 10% by July 2009.

With over 14 million American unemployed in July, President Obama and the Congressional FDRs will then own the recession–Depression Obama Arrives–DOA!

The Affirmative Action Radical President (AARP) changes his tune from hope and change to doom and panic in three weeks.

Looks like the stress of the job is already getting to him.

Keynesian Economics

“In economics Keynesianism (pronounced /ˈkeɪnziən/, also Keynesian economics and Keynesian Theory), is based on the ideas of twentieth-century British economist John Maynard Keynes. According to Keynesian economics the state should stimulate economic growth and improve stability in the private sector — through, for example, adjusting interest rates and taxation and funding public projects.

The theories forming the basis of Keynesian economics were first presented in The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in 1936.

In Keynes’s theory, some micro-level actions of individuals and firms can lead to aggregate macroeconomic outcomes in which the economy operates below its potential output and growth. Many classical economists had believed in Say’s Law, that supply creates its own demand, so that a “general glut” would therefore be impossible. Keynes contended that aggregate demand for goods might be insufficient during economic downturns, leading to unnecessarily high unemployment and losses of potential output. Keynes argued that government policies could be used to increase aggregate demand, thus increasing economic activity and reducing high unemployment and deflation.

Keynes argued that the solution to depression was to stimulate the economy (“inducement to invest”) through some combination of two approaches :

  • a reduction in interest rates.
  • Government investment in infrastructure – the injection of income results in more spending in the general economy, which in turn stimulates more production and investment involving still more income and spending and so forth. The initial stimulation starts a cascade of events, whose total increase in economic activity is a multiple of the original investment.[1]

A central conclusion of Keynesian economics is that in some situations, no strong automatic mechanism moves output and employment towards full employment levels. This conclusion conflicts with economic approaches that assume a general tendency towards an equilibrium. In the ‘neoclassical synthesis’, which combines Keynesian macro concepts with a micro foundation, the conditions of General equilibrium allow for price adjustment to achieve this goal.

The New classical macroeconomics movement, which began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, criticized Keynesian theories, while New Keynesian economics have sought to base Keynes’s idea on more rigorous theoretical foundations.

Fascist movements oppose any ideology or political system that gives direct political power to people as individuals rather than as a collective through the state (liberalism, democracy, individualism); that is deemed detrimental to national identity and unity (class conflict, communism, internationalism, laissez-faire capitalism); that protects and enhances the power of “weak” people rather than promoting “strong” people (egalitarianism); that may oppose major changes to institutions and cultural values that it proposes (conservatism) and that undermine the military strength and military ambitions of the nation (pacifism).[9][10][11] [12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

Fascist movements promote violent conflict between nations, political factions, races, and other groups of people as part of a social Darwinist and militarist view that conflict is a natural process and a part of evolution.[19][20]

Following the defeat of the Axis powers in World War II, the term fascist has been used as a pejorative word. [21]

Friedrich August von Hayek CH (8 May 1899 – 23 March 1992) was an economist and philosopher known throughout the world for his defense of classical liberalism and free-market capitalism against socialist and collectivist thought. He is considered to be one of the most important economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century.[1] One of the most influential members of the Austrian School of economics, he also made significant contributions in the fields of jurisprudence and cognitive science. He shared the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with Gunnar Myrdal “for their pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena.”[2] He also received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991.[3]

From the publication of his The Road to Serfdom in 1944, his name was a reference for passé thinking in the new world of Keynesian economics. By the time that Hayek received the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1974, he had become more and more associated with the solutions to the crises caused by Keynesian economics. Now, at his death almost two decades later, Hayek is not only associated with the successful repudiation of Keynes’ theories, but also with the solutions to the wider social and constitutional crises that are corollaries to Keynes’ economic model.

Hayek was won over from the general social democratic thinking of his university years by reading Ludwig von Mises’ Socialism (1922). He joined Mises’ famous seminar in Vienna, and became associated with Mises’ work on business cycles. Thus, when Hayek accepted a chair at the London School of Economics in 1931, he contributed to the debate on central economic planning which Mises had originally joined.

Hayek’s work on technical economics was and is highly acclaimed. Yet, he believed that the rational evidence disproving wrong economic thinking such as Keynes’, ultimately was shown to be insufficient. Scholars continued to accept wrong economics because there were deeper aspects which caused some to prefer the wrong to the right.

The Meaning of Hayek

“…Hayek is best known for his most widely read work, The Road to Serfdom, which was written to explain to a literate, but nontechnical, readership how the road to political hell is paved with the best intentions. As he made clear, classical liberalism’s conflict with central planning was not over the shared goal of enhancing the well-being of the greatest possible number of people but over the way to achieve that goal.

Hayek’s thesis in The Road to Serfdom is that one intervention inevitably leads to another. The unintended consequences of each market intervention are economic distortions, which generate further interventions to correct them. That interventionist dynamic leads society down the road to serfdom.

In perhaps the best chapter of The Road to Serfdom, Hayek details “Why the Worst Get on Top” in totalitarian societies. The chapter begins with a quotation from Lord Acton: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Hayek then elaborates the Actonian insight.

There are strong reasons for believing that what to us appear the worst features of the existing totalitarian systems are not accidental by-products but phenomena which totalitarianism is certain sooner or later to produce. Just as the democratic statesman who sets out to plan economic life will soon be confronted with the alternative of either assuming dictatorial powers or abandoning his plans, so the totalitarian dictator would soon have to choose between disregard of ordinary morals and failure. It is for this reason that the unscrupulous and uninhibited are likely to be more successful in a society tending toward totalitarianism. Who does not see this has not yet grasped the full width of the gulf which separates totalitarianism from a liberal regime, the utter difference between the whole moral atmosphere under collectivism and the essentially individualist Western civilization. …”

The Road to Serfdom

The Road to Serfdom is a book written by Friedrich Hayek (recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974) which has significantly shaped the political ideologies of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and the concepts of ‘Reagonomics’ and ‘Thatcherism’.[1][2] The Road to Serfdom is among the most influential and popular expositions of classical liberalism and libertarianism.

The book was originally published by Routledge Press in March 1944 in the UK and then by the University of Chicago Press in September 1944. In April, 1945, Reader’s Digest published a slightly shortened version of the book (still in print from the Institute of Economic Affairs), which eventually reached more than 600,000 readers. Around 1950 a picture-book version was published in Look Magazine, later made into a pamphlet and distributed by General Motors. The book has been translated into approximately 20 languages and is dedicated to “The socialists of all parties”. The introduction to the 50th anniversary edition is written by Milton Friedman (another recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics 1976). In 2007, the University of Chicago Press put out a “Definitive Edition”. …”

“Hayek’s central thesis is that all forms of collectivism lead logically and inevitably to tyranny, and he used the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as examples of countries which had gone down “the road to serfdom” and reached tyranny. Hayek argued that within a centrally planned economic system, the distribution and allocation of all resources and goods would devolve onto a small group, which would be incapable of processing all the information pertinent to the appropriate distribution of the resources and goods at the central planners’ disposal. Disagreement about the practical implementation of any economic plan combined with the inadequacy of the central planners’ resource management would invariably necessitate coercion in order for anything to be achieved. Hayek further argued that the failure of central planning would be perceived by the public as an absence of sufficient power by the state to implement an otherwise good idea. Such a perception would lead the public to vote more power to the state, and would assist the rise to power of a “strong man” perceived to be capable of “getting the job done”. After these developments Hayek argued that a country would be ineluctably driven into outright totalitarianism. For Hayek “the road to serfdom” inadvertently set upon by central planning, with its dismantling of the free market system, ends in the destruction of all individual economic and personal freedom.

Hayek argued that countries such as the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany had already gone down the “road to serfdom“, and that various democratic nations are being led down the same road. In The Road to Serfdom he wrote: “The principle that the end justifies the means is in individualist ethics regarded as the denial of all morals. In collectivist ethics it becomes necessarily the supreme rule.” …”

“…Sixty years ago, master mapmaker Friedrich Hayek gave us his seminal work “The Road to Serfdom.” It was swiftly condensed by Reader’s Digest, and became an international best seller. Hayek’s insight would eventually earn him the 1974 Nobel Prize for economics (he’s probably the only Nobel-winning economist who’s also penned a bestseller), and because of him, we’ve been avoiding economic potholes ever since.

           
Hayek wrote the book at the height of World War II. At that time, virtually everyone in his adopted homeland of Britain was involved in the war movement in some way – and Hayek saw the danger in that. At that time of national crisis, government management of the economy made sense. With millions of people carrying arms and those at home busy making the weapons, only a central government could direct the overall economy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But Hayek feared that citizens of the western democracies would draw the wrong conclusions – that, after the Nazis were defeated, too many people would call for continued state control of the economy. They would do so, he warned, in the mistaken belief that if they surrendered some measure of personal freedom to the government, the government would in return guarantee their personal and financial security.

 

 

 

 

Hayek correctly predicted that surrendering personal freedom to the government wouldn’t lead to greater security. It would lead merely to servitude – what Hayek called serfdom. …”

But at this particular moment, only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe. Only government can break the cycle that is crippling our economy, where a lack of spending leads to lost jobs, which leads to even less spending, where an inability to lend and borrow stops growth and leads to even less credit.

There is no reason to regard the political market as necessarily more moral, more just, or more humane than the economic market. On the contrary, since it is a market of power rather than a market of exchange, it is likely to be less just and humane.

The notion of general interest, moreover, is often only an alias for the exploitation of the rest of society by a privileged caste of civil servants, bereaucrats, lobbyists, and professional power brokers. The general interest does not exist; it is only an idea that some people form of what is in their eyes bet for others. The real general interest would result only from a situation in which perfect exchange mechanisms functioned. The general interst can truly be defended only by trying to set up the largest possible number of exchange mechanisms in society while recognizing that perfect exchange–perfect allocation is impossilbe. The one thing we can be sure of is that exchange mechanisms are the only way of really approaching this general interest.

…An attentive and critical examination of government decision-making mechanisms shows that in its manipulation of economic mechanisms and its subsidization of state products and services through taxes, the state is behaving like a monompolist. It is forcing consumers to consume more of what it, the government, thinks is in the consumer’s interest to consume. Much public intervention and regulation, as it is currently conceived, is truly depriving people of freedom, is obliging them to overconsume public goods and services that would not be bought–or wasted–in such quantities if consumers had to recognize, and pay, the real price of them. …”

Election ’08: Barack Obama’s economic blueprint sounds like one his communist father tried to foist on Kenya 40 years ago, with massive taxes and succor shrouded as “investments.”

 

“As a Nairobi bureaucrat, Barack Hussein Obama Sr. advised the pro-Western Kenyan government there to “redistribute” income through higher taxes. He also demonized corporations and called for massive government “investment” in social programs.

 

Barack Obama Sr., who died in 1982 at age 46 in a Kenya car crash.

Writing in a 1965 scholarly paper, Obama’s late father slammed the administration of then-President Jomo Kenyatta for moving the Third World country away from socialism toward capitalism. He chafed at the idea of relying on private investors — who earn “dividends” on their venture capital — to develop the country’s fledgling economy.

“What is more important is to find means by which we can redistribute our economic gains to the benefit of all,” said the senior Obama, a Harvard-educated economist. “This is the government’s obligation.” The “means” he had in mind were confiscatory taxes on a scale that redefines the term “progressive taxation.”

“Theoretically,” he wrote, “there is nothing that can stop the government from taxing 100% of income so long as the people get benefits from the government commensurate with their income which is taxed.” …”

“…His son is also pushing massive taxes and “investments” in social programs — at the expense of free enterprise. Sen. Obama wants to raise the top marginal income-tax rate to at least 39%, while increasing Social Security taxes on those with higher incomes by completely removing the payroll cap. That means many entrepreneurs would be paying 12.4% (6.2% on employer and 6.2% on employee) on Social Security payroll taxes alone, plus the 2.9% on Medicare taxes, for a total federal tax rate of 54%.

In addition, Obama wants to jack up the capital-gains tax rate and reinstate the death tax.

Echoing his father, he argues that the government should impose “tax laws that restore some balance to the distribution of the nation’s wealth.”

And likewise, he asserts that the nation’s wealth ought to be rechanneled by government into “investments” in the economy and welfare programs that create “a new American social compact.”

“We can only compete if our government makes the investments that give us a fighting chance” in the global economy, the Democrat presidential hopeful said in his 2006 book, “The Audacity of Hope.” “And if we know that our families have some net beneath which they cannot fall.”

“Training must be expanded,” his father proposed as one of his government “investments.” Likewise, Sen. Obama wants to “invest” billions more in federal jobs retraining. …”

Question: Does Barack Obama Have Any Friends Who AREN’T Communists?

“…The news of Barack Obama’s close relationship with Frank Marshall Davis has been around before, but it’s important. Via Accuracy in Media:

[T]hrough Frank Marshall Davis, Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his “poetry” and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just “Frank.” 

The reason is apparent: Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union. In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member.

Aren’t we seeing a pattern here? One interaction with one old communist isn’t particularly troubling. A handful of sporadic interactions with a handful of radical left-wingers may not be particularly troubling. But a lifelong pattern of extended associations and alliances with scores of fringe, America-hating radicals is very, very troubling indeed.

 

Just to be clear:

It’s not just that Barack Obama’s father was a Marxist economist or that his mother Stanley came from radical far-left roots.

It’s not just that Obama’s childhood mentor Frank Marshall Davis was a famous communist poet.

It’s not just that Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s pastor, counselor and spiritual mentor of 20 years is a racist, America-hating radical.

It’s not just that Michael Phleger, Obama’s other spiritual mentor is every bit as extreme as Wright.

It’s not just that his wife Michelle has never been really that proud of America, or that she thinks this country is “mean“.

It’s not just that Obama refused to wear a flag, or that he refused to salute it during the national anthem.

It’s not just that Obama’s political and financial benefactor William Ayers is an unrepentant radical socialist terrorist.

It’s not just that Bernadine Dohrn regrets that she didn’t kill more people back in the 1960s.

It’s not just that Alice Palmer, Obama’s political mentor in Chicago, was a communist propagandist.

It’s not just that Obama was a member of the radical socialist New Party or that he ran as a candidate for public office under their far-left platform.

It’s not just that Obama was an agitator, trainer and attorney for the corrupt and radical-left ACORN. ..”

“…As a young attorney in the 1990s, Barack Obama represented ACORN in Washington in their successful efforts to expand Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) authority. In addition to making it easier for ACORN groups to force banks into making risky loans, this also paved the way for banks like Superior to package mortgages as investments, and for the Government Sponsored Enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to underwrite them. These changes created the conditions that ultimately lead to the current financial crisis.

Did they not know this would occur? Were these smart people, led by a Harvard graduate, unaware of the Econ 101 concept of moral hazard that would result from the government making implicit guarantees to underwrite private sector financial risk? They should have known that freeing the high-risk mortgage market of risk, calamity was sure to ensue. I think they did.

Barack Obama, the Cloward-Piven candidate, no matter how he describes himself, has been a radical activist for most of his political career. That activism has been in support of organizations and initiatives that at their heart seek to tear the pillars of this nation asunder in order to replace them with their demented socialist vision. Their influence has spread so far and so wide that despite their blatant culpability in the current financial crisis, they are able to manipulate Capital Hill politicians to cut them into $140 billion of the bailout pie!

God grant those few responsible yet remaining in Washington, DC the strength to prevent this massive fraud from occurring. God grant them the courage to stand up in the face of this Marxist tidal wave.

George Soros is one of Barack Obama’s primary financial backers and agenda puppeter.

Much of Barack Obama’s socialist agenda and ideas for the United States comes directly from Soros and in turn through his network of leftist funded organizations. This includes the funding of organizations that advocate abortion, open borders, amnesty for illegal aliens, a cap and trade tax, to prevent man-made global warming, huge cuts in defense spending, increasing the minimum wage and the world poverty tax just to name a few.

Soros likes to be considered a “stateless stateman”.

In fact he is more accurately described as the Godfather of World Socialism.

Too bad Soros has not apparently read or understood the works of Friedrick Hayek, Karl Popper’s good friend and author of the Open Society and Its Enemies for which Soros’ Open Society Institute (OSI) is named.

I find Soros ideas interesting but his dismissal of capitalism as market fundamentalism both revealing and mistaken.

Milton Friedman was right, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.  

Rumors on talk radio are that Soros and his financial currency trader group are planning an October surprise such as either a run on the U.S dollar or bidding up of oil future contract prices.

If this happens and they are successful, U.S. gasoline prices would significantly increase above $4 a gallon as the US dollar declines in value and the cost of oil increases.

This is turn would throw the economy into a recession or at less increased fear of a recession in 2009.

The theory is this would help Obama.

I think not.

Such a move would backfire for the simple reason, it is the Democratic Party that is stopping oil and gas exploration off the U.S. coasts and in ANWR.

Furthermore, the Democratic Party is largely responsible through Federal government intervention in the mortage markets insisting on home loans for people that would not normally qualify.

This resulted in the financial collapse of both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the need for its bailout and the collapse or buyout of a number of mortage bankers, investment banks, and broker dealers.

One of Senator’s Obama’s financial and housing advisor just so happens to be Franklin Raines, the man who collected over $90 million in compensation for mismanaging Fannie Mae (see videos below on Fannie Mae, Raines, and the bailout).

I think there will be two October surprises that will appear in the last week of the campaign.

Just in case a Soros instigated surprise materializes, you better fill up your gas tank in the last week on October.

Make sure you have enough gas in your vehicle’s gas tank to get to the place you vote.

If you want a recession and socialism vote Obama.

If you want a job and capitalism vote McCain. 

Only you can prevent socialism in America.

“…Soros: “Well I’m afraid we are not through it at all. In some ways we are heading into the storm rather than coming out of it. And right at this minute we are at the very precarious moment because the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers has thrown the financial markets into turmoil.” 

Newsnight: What do you think will happen? More banks go under?

Soros: Well, certainly more banks but maybe not the size of Lehman. But right now an even larger company, American International which is an insurance company is under pressure and a rescue is being prepared and the question is whether it will be successfully put together.

Newsnight: So was it right then to step in? Do you think AIG should be rescued? Do you think Lehman should have been rescued?

Soros: Whether Lehman should have been rescued depends on whether the financial system survives it or not. If the financial system survives it, then it was the right thing to do to let them go bust. If there is a meltdown, then it wasn’t because one thing is clear that you musn’t allow the financial system to collapse as it did in the 1930s. They’ve been reluctant to put taxpayers money at risk but if necessary, I’m sure they will do it.

The Soros Threat To Democracy

“…George Soros is known for funding groups such as http://MoveOn.org that seek to manipulate public opinion. So why is the billionaire’s backing of what he believes in problematic? In a word: transparency.

How many people, for instance, know that James Hansen, a man billed as a lonely “NASA whistleblower” standing up to the mighty U.S. government, was really funded by Soros’ Open Society Institute, which gave him “legal and media advice”?

That’s right, Hansen was packaged for the media by Soros’ flagship “philanthropy,” by as much as $720,000, most likely under the OSI’s “politicization of science” program.

That may have meant that Hansen had media flacks help him get on the evening news to push his agenda and lawyers pressuring officials to let him spout his supposedly “censored” spiel for weeks in the name of advancing the global warming agenda.

Hansen even succeeded, with public pressure from his nightly news performances, in forcing NASA to change its media policies to his advantage. Had Hansen’s OSI-funding been known, the public might have viewed the whole production differently. The outcome could have been different.

That’s not the only case. Didn’t the mainstream media report that 2006’s vast immigration rallies across the country began as a spontaneous uprising of 2 million angry Mexican-flag waving illegal immigrants demanding U.S. citizenship in Los Angeles, egged on only by a local Spanish-language radio announcer?

Turns out that wasn’t what happened, either. Soros’ OSI had money-muscle there, too, through its $17 million Justice Fund. The fund lists 19 projects in 2006. One was vaguely described involvement in the immigration rallies. Another project funded illegal immigrant activist groups for subsequent court cases.

So what looked like a wildfire grassroots movement really was a manipulation from OSI’s glassy Manhattan offices. The public had no way of knowing until the release of OSI’s 2006 annual report.

Meanwhile, OSI cash backed terrorist-friendly court rulings, too.

Do people know last year’s Supreme Court ruling abolishing special military commissions for terrorists at Guantanamo was a Soros project? OSI gave support to Georgetown lawyers in 2006 to win Hamdan v. Rumsfeld — for the terrorists.

OSI also gave cash to other radicals who pressured the Transportation Security Administration to scrap a program called “Secure Flight,” which matched flight passenger lists with terrorist names. It gave more cash to other left-wing lawyers who persuaded a Texas judge to block cell phone tracking of terrorists.

They trumpeted this as a victory for civil liberties. Feel safer? …”

Did Soros’ funding pay off? You be the judge. Do a quick google search on James Hansen to read any of the thousands of mainstream media stories touting Hansen’s claims of censorship by the Bush administration. This wouldn’t be the first time credibility questions have been raised regarding Hansen and his alarmist claims [see “When does 1,400 Media Interviews = Muzzled” (03/20/07)].

Economist Mark Perry, on his Carpe Diem blog site, reports that both the U.S. share of world GDP and its global stock market capitalization are shrinking. But this isn’t a bad thing at all. It doesn’t mean that America is heading downwards. On the contrary, it means that newly freed economies are heading up.
The reality here is that the rising tide of global capitalism is lifting all boats that employ it. Capitalism works. It’s a good thing. It’s the key to unlocking a nation’s prosperity. In fact, free-market capitalism is the greatest anti-poverty program ever devised by man.

 

Another billionaire, George Soros, the Davos partygoer who finances near every left-wing political-action group on both sides of the Atlantic pond, recently wrote in the Financial Times that the era of capitalism is coming to an end. Soros, of course, has been predicting this for at least twenty years — through the greatest world boom in history. And how was it that Soros made his money? Trading currencies in the technologically advanced world financial markets, the very same markets that were spawned by 20th century free-market capitalism.

 

So I just have to smile when billionaires like Bill Gates and George Soros turn cold shoulders to the blessings capitalism bestows. Or when their buddy, Warren Buffett, broadcasts the importance of hiking tax rates on successful earners and investors.

McCain and Leadership in a Time of Financial Crisis

“…Since Barack Obama seems to have hung up the hope and change mantra for now to adopt the populist demagoguery that has sunk Democratic presidential hopefuls in the past, McCain should practice some jujitsu and turn Obama’s argument against him.
Barack Obama is the hedge-fund candidate in terms of findraising according to the New York Times. He and his fellow Democrats — including New York Senators Schumer and Clinton — are the darlings of Wall Street. Obama has enjoyed outsized donations from hedge fund managers and Wall Streeters.The granddaddy of all hedge fund monsters is George Soros, who was also Barack Obama’s early presidential race sugardaddy. Soros has also been talking down the economy while profiting from the mortgage meltdown. Soros is the chief donor to a wide variety of 527 groups (including MoveOn.Org) that have been working to assure Obama’s election.
Obama raised almost $400,000 dollars from the employees of the now kaput Lehman Brothers-topping all other candidates, though Senators Clinton, Schumer and Dodd did quite nicely
.
      
Two other leading donors to the left are Herbert and Marion Sandler, who have worked with Soros to promote left-wing causes. This husband and wife founded Golden West Financial, a savings and loan that was a huge player in the mortgage market. Did they see the writing on the wall when they sold their company to Wachovia for billions of dollars before the mortgage meltdown?
Why do you think Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other leading lights of the Democratic Party castigate oil companies and not hedge fund managers? The paydays of Wall Street players dwarf those of oil companies. Their profit ratios can be astronomical compared to those of oil companies. They can wreck the financial markets that are the lubrication for the rest of the economy.

 

Gloves off: Now, Obama calls for prosecuting GOP donor; Update: AIP responds

“…I noted this morning that the Obama campaign’s Chicago-style thug effort to shut down the independent ad on Bill Ayers is part of the larger effort to intimidate conservative donors and curtail the free speech of The One’s critics.

It’s getting uglier, people.

Obama’s lawyer has sent a second letter to the Justice Department calling for the head of Dallas billionare Harold Simmons, who funded the Ayers ad that the Obama campaign doesn’t want the public to see.

Feel the chill:

Obama general counsel Bob Bauer today sent a second, sharper letter to the Justice Department, directly attacking the Dallas billionaire funding a harsh attack ad, Harold Simmons.

“We reiterate our request that the Department of Justice fulfill its commitment to take prompt action to investigate and to prosecute the American issues Project, and we further request that the Department of Justice investigate and prosecute Howard (sic) Simmons for a knowing and willful violation of the individual aggregate contribution limits,” he wrote.

He called the group’s activities “patently illegal.”

Bauer made the case that Simmons’ group [is not] fulfilling its […] nonprofit charter because it hasn’t spent any money on anything other than attacking Obama. Simmons’ spokesman, Christian Pinkston, told me yesterday that plans to, and dismissed the complaints as an effort to lawyer away charges the campaign can’t rebut.

I posted AIP’s rebuttal here yesterday. And as I’ve noted today and will note again: Obama has some nerve whining about campaign finance integrity after getting caught hiding $800,000 in ACORN payments.

What’s going on? Simple: The Left has its George Soros sugar daddy and can’t stand that conservatives have their own committed benefactors. They’ve got a massive non-profit infrastructure funded with taxpayers and operating flagrantly in an illegal, partisan manner (hello, ACORN Watch!). They want the playing field all to themselves. And they are fighting for that turf by any means necessary.

Can they do it?

No, they can’t. Not if you don’t let them. …”
