State Department: ‘Of Course’ Hillary’s Classified Email Spillage is ‘Very Serious’

Guy Benson

A follow-up to Katie’s post, which detailed Fox News’ latest report on how Hillary Clinton’s impropernational security-compromising email scheme led to expanding concentric circles of intelligence “spillage.” In case you missed it, here are the details:

At least a dozen email accounts handled the “top secret” intelligence that was found on Hillary Clinton’s server and recently deemed too damaging for national security to release, a U.S. government official close to the review told Fox News. The official said the accounts include not only Clinton’s but those of top aides – including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Jake Sullivan and Philippe Reines – as well as State Department Under Secretary for Management Patrick Kennedy and others. A second source not authorized to speak on the record said the number of accounts involved could be as high as 30 and reflects how the intelligence was broadly shared, replied to, and copied to individuals using the unsecured server. The State Department recently confirmed that the messages in question include the most sensitive kind of intelligence.

Intelligence officials familiar with the recently-confirmed FBI criminal investigation into the matter say the secrets that Clinton knowingly put at risk were some of the most sensitive in existence. Her presidential campaign has cynically insisted that this top secret (and above) intelligence be made public, to “prove” that it’s no big deal. Looking past the fact that this isn’t how the law works, Team Hillary knows full well that their bad-faith request cannot be fulfilled, as the State Department has concluded that 29 emails are too secret to release even with significant redactions. This determination confirmed urgent concerns raised by the intelligence community Inspector General, which prompted the initial FBI probe. Pressed by Fox’s Catherine Herridge yesterday, a State Department spokesman acknowledged that new details about the extent of the classified email spillage are “of course” quite serious:

He noted that the department is currently focused on complying with a court order to publicly release the final round of Hillary Clinton’s (non-deleted) emails. This week, a federal judge rebuffed the State Department’s request to push back the deadline significantly:

A federal judge has rejected the State Department’s request for a month-long delay in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit over Hillary Clinton’s emails. While the agency was supposed to have completed its review of Clinton’s private emails by the end of January, State Department officials attempted to push the deadline back to Feb. 29 due to an “error” that caused the agency to overlook more than 7,000 pages of records. But Judge Rudolph Contreras of the U.S. District Court told the State Department Tuesday he was reluctant to allow the agency to stall the release of the final batch of Clinton emails until the end of the month. He instead asked the State Department to publish what they could by Feb. 18 at the latest…The State Department’s attempt to stretch the production schedule in the Clinton email case would put the last document dump after the first round of Democratic primaries and prohibit the media from circulating in-depth stories about the emails until the “Super Tuesday” nominating contests were well underway on March 1.

This last batch of emails is expected to include some of the most complex and sensitive materials to date, meaning that the list of ‘too secret to release’ messages is likely to grow.  Former US Attorney General Michael Mukasey has made the case that based on evidence already in the public realm, Mrs. Clinton should face an indictment.  That decision will ultimately lie with Democratic donor and current Attorney General Loretta Lynch.  Lynch reports directly to President Obama, who is supporting Clinton’s presidential bid, according to Obama’s former top spokesman.  I’ll leave you with this timely reminder from New Hampshire’s Democratic voters:

Exits: Among Dem voters who prioritize honesty, Hillary loses narrowly, 93-5%.

State Department: Yeah, exposing top-secret info on unsecured e-mail chains is “a serious matter”

BY ED MORRISSEY

Well, that’s good to know. Almost a year after the revelation about Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized home-brew e-server and months of State Department blather about “overclassification” being the real issue, their spokesman finally admits that passing top-secret information through it is “a serious matter.” Better (seven years) late than never, I suppose (viaGuy Benson):

The reporter pushing the spokesman into this statement is Fox News’ Catherine Herridge, who along with Pamela Browne has been garnering scoop after scoop on the e-mail scandal. Herridge manages to push the spokesman into tacitly confirming her reporting on how “at least a dozen e-mail accounts” had access to the unprotected top-secret information. Note that he raises no objections to Herridge’s question, not even after she repeats it with those details.

It’s enough for retired Defense Intelligence Agency chief Gen. Michael Flynn, who served in that role for President Barack Obama, to call for Hillary to withdraw from the presidential race:

Flynn and other high-ranking former intelligence officials told TheDCNF they are alarmed that some of the nation’s most highly classified documents contained in a secretive program called the Special Access Program (SAP) were transferred to Clinton’s unclassified home server.

The documents “had to be moved off electronically or removed out of the secure site physically, then it had to be put onto an unclassified email system,” Flynn said. “Someone who does this is completely irresponsible, but totally unaccountable and shows a streak of arrogance to the American public that is unworthy of anyone thinking they can run for President of the United States.”

“This is unbelievable,” Flynn said. “I don’t think anybody should be talking about her being potentially the next President of the United States.”

He’s not the only intelligence professional to make that case. The Daily Caller’s Richard Pollock quotes several intel veterans about the dangerous nature of these revelations:

Placement of SAP-classified information on a non-secure server was the “single, most dangerous security violation that can ever happen to the United States,” said Col. James Waurishuk, former deputy director of intelligence for the U.S. Central Command.

SAP material was “the most stringently compartmented and protected information in the entire U.S. government,” said Waurishuk, who worked on the White House National Security Council during former President George H.W. Bush’s tenure.

Special Forces Col. James Williamson (Ret.) told TheDCNF that SAP classified documents are “the most sensitive of sensitive information” and that normal classified storage facilities, called Special Compartmentalized Information Facilities (SCIF), cannot provide adequate protection for SAP information.

Until a week ago, the State Department had played along with Hillary’s defenders in claiming that the information exposed was of little consequence and the subject of inter-agency disputes — which, by the way, is no defense against exposure of other agencies’ classified data. The State Department decision to withhold these 29 e-mails, and their tacit admission of “serious” spillage of top-secret information, is a significant change in posture. That should have Hillary and especially her aides very, very worried.

State Dept. won’t rule out more ‘top secret’ Clinton emails

State Department officials would not specify whether a batch of Hillary Clinton’s private emails slated for release Saturday would contain more “top secret” documents.

“I don’t have any preview to offer you or details about what this batch may hold,” Mark Toner, an agency spokesman, told reporters Friday. “We’ve been very clear all along in this process as we review these emails, we’ll upgrade them as is seen necessary. And we’ll continue to do that. But I don’t have anything to preview, sorry.”

When the State Department published 1,118 pages of Clinton’s emails at the end of January, it withheld 37 pages that contained top secret information. More than 1,600 emails have been upgraded to some level of classification since the agency began releasing them in May of last year.

Earlier this week, a federal judge ordered the State Department to publish as many emails as possible in four separate installments spread across the month of February. The court order rejected the agency’s request that it be allowed to wait until the end of the month to publish the remaining Clinton emails.

“Obviously it’s tomorrow, and so we’re still working diligently on this,” Toner said of the Saturday email release, which should include 550 emails.

“So we’ll be able to let all or many of you know what time we expect that release to take place and then we’ll also issue whatever more information or characterization we can provide at the time,” he added.

Toner said he could not give an estimate of how many emails would be considered classified in the upcoming trove.

As many as 29 emails have been upgraded to “top secret” this year, and the agency could upgrade significantly more before February is over.
