Background Articles and Videos

Harry Morgan

“…Harry Morgan (born April 10, 1915) is an American actor. Morgan is perhaps best known as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on M*A*S*H (1975–1983), Pete Porter on both Pete and Gladys (1960–1962) and December Bride (1954–1959), Detective Bill Gannon on Dragnet (1967–1970), and Amos Coogan on Hec Ramsey (1972–1974). He has appeared in more than 100 films.

Early life and career

Morgan was born Harry Bratsberg[1] in Detroit, Michigan of Norwegian and Swedish heritage.[1] He was raised in Muskegon, Michigan, and graduated from Muskegon High School in 1933, where he achieved distinction as a statewide debating champion.[2] He originally aspired to a law degree, but began acting while a junior at the University of Chicago in 1935.

Morgan began acting on stage under his birth name, joining the Group Theatre in New York City in 1937, and appearing in the original production of the Clifford Odets play Golden Boy, followed by a host of successful Broadway roles alongside such other Group members as Lee J. Cobb, Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner, and Karl Malden.

Morgan did summer stock at the Pine Brook Country Club located in the countryside of Nichols, Connecticut, with the Group Theatre (New York) formed by Harold Clurman, Cheryl Crawford and Lee Strasberg in the 1930s and early 1940s.[3][4]

Screen debut

Morgan made his screen debut (originally using the name “Henry Morgan”) in the 1942 movie To the Shores of Tripoli. His screen name later would become “Henry ‘Harry’ Morgan” and eventually Harry Morgan, to avoid confusion with the then-popular humorist of the same name. Morgan appeared in the 1941 movie “Sun Valley Serenade” as a young man pushing his way to the front of a ballroom crowd to hear Glenn Miller’s band play.

Screen career

Morgan continued to play a number of significant roles on the big screen in such films as The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), Wing and a Prayer (1944), Dragonwyck (1946), The Big Clock (1948), High Noon (1952), and several films in the 1950s for director Anthony Mann, including Bend of the River (1952), The Glenn Miller Story (1953), Thunder Bay (film) (1953), The Far Country (1955) and Strategic Air Command (1955); in his later film career he starred in Inherit the Wind (1960), How the West Was Won (1962), John Goldfarb, Please Come Home (1965), Frankie and Johnny (1966), Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), Support Your Local Gunfighter! (1971), Snowball Express (1972), The Shootist (1976), The Wild Wild West Revisited (1979), and a cameo in the film version of Dragnet (1987). Besides all of the Anthony Mann films, Morgan was in a number of movies with James Stewart, including The Mountain Road (1960), How the West Was Won, Bend of the River (1952), The Far Country (1955), The Glenn Miller Story (1954) and The Shootist (1976), also with John Wayne, with whom he also shared scenes in How the West Was Won.

 1950s TV roles

Morgan hosted the NBC radio series Mystery in the Air starring Peter Lorre in 1947. On CBS, he played Pete Porter in Pete and Gladys (1960–1962), with Cara Williams as wife Gladys. Pete and Gladys was a spinoff of December Bride (1954–1959), starring Spring Byington, Dean Miller, Frances Rafferty, and Verna Felton. When Miller and Rafferty died within three months of each other in 2004, Morgan became the last surviving member of the December Bride cast.

 1960s: Dragnet and other roles

In the 1964–1965 season, Morgan co-starred as Seldom Jackson in the 26-week NBC comedy/drama Kentucky Jones, starring Dennis Weaver.

Morgan is even more widely recognized as Officer Bill Gannon, Joe Friday’s partner in the revived version of Dragnet (1967–1970). Morgan had also appeared with Dragnet star Jack Webb in two film noir movies, Dark City (1950) and Appointment with Danger (1951), and was an early regular member of Jack Webb’s stock company of actors on the original Dragnet radio show. Morgan later worked on two other shows for Webb, 1971’s The D.A. and the 1972–1974 western Hec Ramsey. Morgan also appeared in at least one episode of Gunsmoke.

M*A*S*H (1975–1983)

Morgan’s first appearance on M*A*S*H was in the show’s third season (1974–1975), when he played spaced-out Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele (“That’s three e’s, not all in a row!”) in “The General Flipped at Dawn”, which originally aired on September 10, 1974. Steele is convinced that the 4077th needs to move closer to the front line, to be near the action.

Morgan’s memorable Emmy-nominated performance impressed the producers of the show. The following season, Morgan joined the cast of M*A*S*H as Colonel Sherman T. Potter. Morgan replaced McLean Stevenson, who had left the show at the end of the previous season. Col. Potter was a career army officer who was tough, yet good-humored and caring—a father figure to the people under his command. The picture of Col. Potter’s wife, on the right side of his desk, is actually that of Mrs. Harry Morgan. He asked if he could use the picture of his wife, and the producers had no objections.

In 1980, Morgan won an Emmy award for his performance on M*A*S*H. After the end of the series, Morgan reprised the Potter role in a short-lived spinoff series, AfterMASH.

 Later years

In 1986, he costarred with Hal Linden in Blacke’s Magic, a show about a magician who doubled as a detective solving unusual crimes. The series lasted only one season.

In 1987, Morgan played Martin Vanderhof on a TV series version of Kaufman and Hart’s Pulitzer prize-winning play You Can’t Take It With You.

In 1987, Morgan reprised his Bill Gannon character for a supporting role in another film version of Dragnet, a parody of the original series written by and starring Dan Aykroyd and co-starring Tom Hanks and Christopher Plummer.

In the 1990s, Morgan played the role of Judge Stoddard Bell in a series of The Incident; Against Her Will: An Incident in Baltimore (TV 1992) and Incident in a Small Town (1994 TV) TV movies starring Walter Matthau. He was on an episode of The Simpsons as Officer Bill Gannon from Dragnet in the 7th season (“Mother Simpson”) and had a recurring role on 3rd Rock from the Sun as Professor Suter. Morgan directed episodes for several TV series, including two episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and eight episodes of M*A*S*H. Morgan had a guest role on The Jeff Foxworthy Show as Raymond and a guest role on Grace Under Fire as Jean’s pot-smoking boyfriend.

In 2006, Morgan was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Personal life

Morgan has been married twice: first to Eileen Detchon, from 1940 until her death in 1985, and then to Barbara Bushman Quine (granddaughter of silent film star Francis X. Bushman) from December 17, 1986 to the present. He had four sons with his first wife: Christopher, Charles, Paul, and Daniel (who died in 1989). His grandson Spencer Morgan is a columnist at the New York Observer.[5]

In July 1997, Morgan was charged with abusing his wife in July 1996 after a beating left her with injuries to her eye, foot, and arm. Prosecutors dropped the charges after Morgan completed a six-month domestic violence counseling program[6]

During Morgan’s tenure on M*A*S*H, a photograph of Eileen Detchon regularly appeared on the desk of his character, Sherman T. Potter, to represent Potter’s wife, Mildred. Mildred was also the name of Morgan’s character’s wife in High Noon, as well as the name of his wife in the movie “The Apple Dumpling Gang”. A drawing of a horse, seen on the wall behind Potter’s desk, was drawn by Morgan’s grandson Jeremy Morgan. Eileen was the name of the wife of Officer Bill Gannon on Dragnet.

Americans for Prosperity

“…Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is a Washington, D.C.-based conservative political advocacy group which advocates for limited government and free markets on the local, state and federal levels.

History and mission

An August 2010 editorial article by Jane Mayer in The New Yorker says that the Kochs have given to support their immediate self-interest as well as to fund organizations that covertly aim to push the country in a libertarian direction. It says that institutions Koch have subsidized also include the Institute for Justice, which files lawsuits opposing state and federal regulations; the Institute for Humane Studies, which underwrites libertarian academics; and the Bill of Rights Institute, which promotes a libertarian view of the Constitution. It also says that the organizations funded by the Kochs employ specialists who write position papers that are subsequently quoted by politicians and pundits. David Koch was quoted by The New Yorker as saying, “If we’re going to give a lot of money, we’ll make darn sure they spend it in a way that goes along with our intent… And if they make a wrong turn and start doing things we don’t agree with, we withdraw funding.”[1]

Ira Stoll of FutureOfCapitalism.com criticized the article, stating that Mayer seemed to imply that “left-wing think tanks are nonpartisan watchdogs, but the free-market ones are part of some covert stealth nefarious plot”, and referred to the open data already available about Koch-connected think tanks.[2][3] Matt Welch of Reason wrote in support of Stoll and labeled the New Yorker article a “hit-piece”.[2]

AFP aims to promote an economic policy that supports business and regulatory restraint by government, according to its literature. AFP opposed the $787 billion stimulus package.[4]

Leadership and structure

  • Art Pope, director[5][6]
  • James C. Miller, director
  • James E. Stephenson, director
  • Frayda Levy, director

Other national staff include: Tim Phillips, president; Phil Kerpen, director of policy; and Erik Telford, director of AFP’s RightOnline new media program. Tim Phillips is a former business partner of Ralph Reed, who was the executive director of the Christian Coalition when it rose to national prominence.[7]

Americans for Prosperity is led by Tim Phillips, a former partner with Ralph Reed’s Century Strategies.[8][9] From 2003 to 2007 AFP was led by Nancy Pfotenhauer (Koch Industries’ chief lobbyist from 1996 to 2001), who left to become an adviser for the 2008 John McCain presidential campaign.

For its outreach, the organization has chapters in 26 of the 50 US states.[10]

Funding

Media Transparency says that Americans for Prosperity Foundation has received seven grants totaling $1,181,000 between 2004 to 2006. Grants to the foundation have included:[11]

  • $1,000,000 from the Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation, one of the Koch Family Foundations;
  • $125,000 from three grants over 2004 and 2005 from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation;
  • $50,000 in 2005 from the Ruth and Lovett Peters Foundation;
  • $1,000 in 2006 from the Roe Foundation; and
  • $5,000 in 2005 from the Armstrong Foundation;

In its 2007 annual tax return, the AFP Foundation’s reported that its revenue was $5,695,000 with expenditure of $6,768,000. While the AFP Foundation ran at a loss of $1,072,000, it had a further $507,000 in reserves. Of its expenditure, $2,129,000 was spent on national office operations with just over $2.9 million allocated to the state-based chapters.

Based on its financial operations and programs, the independent Charity Navigator nonprofit review organization has given Americans For Prosperity Foundation a three-star rating out of four stars, and a 50.92 rating out of a possible 60 points.[12]

 Obama continues attack on Chamber of Commerce

By Dan Eggen and Scott Wilson

Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, October 11, 2010

“…The White House intensified its attacks Sunday on the powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its alleged ties to foreign donors, part of an escalating Democratic effort to link Republican allies with corporate and overseas interests ahead of the November midterm elections.

“…The party has also seized on a report last week by ThinkProgress, an arm of the liberal Center for American Progress, documenting the chamber’s ties to “AmChams” and other overseas business groups that pay dues to the U.S.-based group. The report said the chamber funds U.S. political activities out of the same account that collects foreign dues, and raised the possibility that the money could be unlawfully commingled.

Chamber officials say the group collects about $100,000 in dues from overseas affiliates and that the money is cordoned off for use on “international programs.” The business lobby has declined to release further details, citing confidentiality rules governing nonprofits.

Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said Obama and other administration officials are not accusing the chamber of illegality nor calling for an investigation into its campaign spending. He also acknowledged that the White House has no specific evidence that the chamber is using foreign money in U.S. elections.

“The president is making a disclosure argument,” Earnest said. “He’s just saying for the good of democracy the chamber should disclose where it is getting its money and how it is financing these ads, and that all organizations should.” …”

The Fall of The Roman Empire

“…The Fall of the Roman Empire is a 1964 English-language epic film produced by Samuel Bronston Productions and The Rank Organisation, and released by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by Anthony Mann and produced by Samuel Bronston with Jaime Prades and Michal Waszynski as associate producers. The screenplay was by Ben Barzman, Basilio Franchina and Philip Yordan. It was photographed in 70mm Ultra Panavision by Robert Krasker, with an original music score by Dimitri Tiomkin. The historian Will Durant was engaged to advise on period detail and plot.

The film starred Sophia Loren (Lucilla), Stephen Boyd (Livius), Alec Guinness (Marcus Aurelius), James Mason (Timonides), Christopher Plummer (Commodus), Mel Ferrer (Cleander), and Omar Sharif (Sohamus, King of Armenia) with Finlay Currie (Caecina), Anthony Quayle (Verulus), John Ireland (Ballomar), Eric Porter (Julianus), Andrew Keir (Polybius), Douglas Wilmer (Niger) and George Murcell (Victorinus).

The film was a financial failure at the box-office. However, it is considered unusually intelligent and thoughtful for a film of the contemporary sword and sandal genre and also enjoys a 100% “Fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot

The timeframe of the film is 180–192 AD, from the last days of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius to the death of his son and successor Commodus. The film opens with Marcus Aurelius conducting his war to pacify the Germanic tribes along the Danube frontier. He has just summoned the governors of all the Roman provinces to his camp in order to present to them Gaius Metellus Livius (a fictional character) as his heir and successor. This is conceivable because Livius indicates that he had been brought into the imperial family by the emperor, presumably by adoption, and the four previous emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, and Antoninus Pius) had made their adopted sons their heirs.

What is foremost in Livius’ mind is to marry his beloved Lucilla, the emperor’s daughter, but Marcus Aurelius feels he must marry her to King Sohamus of Armenia to cement a peace treaty between him and Rome as a buffer on Rome’s eastern border to the hostile Persians (Parthians). Livius appeals to her to go away with him, but her duty overrules her heart.

Commodus is devastated when he learns of his father’s intention to make Livius his successor. This makes Commodus reckless and hostile toward Livius, who had once been a close friend. Later Commodus would explain that this was his way of letting the gods decide who would be successor. Conspirators, acting independently of Commodus, poison Marcus Aurelius, leaving Livius with only one choice: to proclaim Commodus as “undoubted Caesar.” Commodus gratefully makes Livius commander of all Roman armies and his second-in-command.

Commodus begins his reign by opposing Marcus Aurelius’ policy of peace and freedom, which he characterizes as weakness, and demanding more taxes and tribute from the eastern provinces of Syria and Egypt, driving them to rebellion. Meanwhile Livius pacifies the northern frontier by following Marcus Aurelius’ policy of making “human frontiers” for the Roman Empire. He and Timonides, a Greek Christian freedman and friend of Marcus Aurelius, return to Rome along with the conquered German leaders (Ballomar, et al.) with the proposal to Romanize and settle them on abandoned farm land. This proposal is accepted by the Roman Senate, but it sets Livius at odds with Commodus, who all but banishes him to continued duty on the northern frontier. When Commodus is faced with the defection of the eastern provinces and Armenia, he has no one but Livius to turn to. Livius proves to be successful against the eastern rebellion, but he declines following Commodus’ demand for brutal retribution. Livius answers Commodus with the demand for either a new Rome or a new Caesar.

Commodus reacts by bribing the senators, plebians, and the army to side with him against Livius. Commodus’s success is apparent when the traditional head for the colossal statue of Jupiter in the Capitoline temple is replaced with a likeness of the head of Commodus, and in the senate it is proposed to change Rome’s name to “the city of Commodus” and the empire’s name to “the empire of Commodus.” Livius is arrested and is set to be executed with Lucilla, who had tried to assassinate her brother. Commodus returns Livius’ favor to him in proclaiming him undoubted Caesar by challenging him to a gladiatorial combat with the imperial throne as the prize. Livius prevails by killing Commodus and rescuing Lucilla from the flames of execution. Victorinus, who had been bribed by Commodus to deliver Livius’s army to him, proclaims Livius Caesar, but Livius declines with the warning that if he were Caesar he would crucify them all (Victorinus, Julianus, Niger, et al.). The film culminates in an auction for the imperial throne. The narrator sums it up: “This was the beginning of the fall of the Roman Empire. A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.”[1] This actually occurred in the accession of Didius Julianus. …”
