The suicide bombings carried out in London in 2005 by British Muslims revealed an enormous fifth column of Islamist terrorists and their sympathizers. Under the noses of British intelligence, London has become the European hub for the promotion, recruitment and financing of Islamic terror and extremism – so much so that it has been mockingly dubbed Londonistan. In this ground-breaking book Melanie Phillips pieces together the story of how Londonistan developed as a result of the collapse of traditional English identity and accommodation of a particularly virulent form of multiculturalism. Londonistan has become a country within the country and not only threatens Britain but its special relationship with the U.S. as well.

Melanie Phillips

Melanie Phillips (born 4 June 1951) is an Orwell Prize winning British journalist and author. Her articles appear mainly in the Daily Mail newspaper and cover political and social issues from a conservative perspective; she has also written for The Guardian, and is a regular panelist on the BBC Radio 4 programme The Moral Maze and BBC One’s Question Time. She has authored four books, including most recently World Turned Upside Down in 2010. In 2003, The Guardian wrote of her that her “trademarks of social concern, pessimism about modern Britain and seemingly absolute certainty have made her – against stiff competition – arguably the most high-profile and prolific British pundit on moral and political matters.”[1]

Book review of ‘Londonistan’ by Melanie Phillips — Conclusion

“…Phillips correctly points out that the Tube bombings in 2005 shook the nation, surely instilling in them increased fear, yet when television coverage aired of Londoners after the tragedy, Londoners appeared remarkably resolute. Still, one can easily imagine their vexation as they had to take that next bus or train, and would not one wish for security in that situation, rather than wish to stir the pot, so to speak? And so we find, once again in a historical context, a policy of appeasement. Let us not anger or offend anyone seemed to be the resulting mentality. Phillips declares that Britons wound up blaming the United States in general, and George W. Bush in particular, for their woes.

Which brings readers to another repeated theme in Londonistan, and that is that the wholly unpopular Iraq War, and Britain’s ultimate support via their then-Prime Minister Tony Blair, for the U.S.-led invasion, is believed to be by many in England as the cause of their dilemma. They appear to see the problem not as radical ideology based on religious fanaticism, but rather something the Britons brought upon themselves due to their support for the United States’ foreign policy, and woe be to the United States and George W. Bush for bringing this spate of terrorism to the peace-loving folks of England. Britain, the very one that give birth to the ideals of democracy and the rule of law, has now found herself a victim of her own mentality, according to Phillips.

After all, if the U.S. had not invaded Iraq, the Muslims would not be so angry, and would therefore have no need for revenge, i.e. terrorist attacks. Thus Londoners, Phillips declares, erroneously seemed to conclude that the subway bombings were the fault of the United States, and they neglected to place the fault where it rightly belongs—on radical Muslims who simply needed a platform from which to launch their religiously inspired assault, a scapegoat if you will. To say that Muslim-inspired aggression is not based on religion is ludicrous, given their own mission statements and publicly stated goals of instituting Sharia law, or strict Islamic law, in all facets of life, and in all countries, from personal to government. (It’s interesting to note here that they received a concession of sorts just this past year [2008] from no less that the Archbishop of Canterbury himself, when he said it was “unavoidable” that British law would have to accommodate Muslim practices.) …”–Conclusion
