Presidential Election 2008: American Elites Vs. American People

Last Saturday I accidently listened on the radio to both the Republican and Democratic Candidates debates.

The Democratic candidates sounded like Marxist attacking  American business, free enterprise and markets with their class warfare rhertoric.

What all four Democratic candidates needed to be reminded of is that American businesses produce goods and services, jobs, income, and wealth that the American people need and want. Profits provide the funds to invest in capital to expand the quality and quantity of goods and services produced.

Change in the form of more taxes, more government spending and regulation, larger deficits and a larger national debt, do not provide the goods, services, jobs and profits for the American people. This is not change for the better but change for the worse. Actually, it is more of the same–tax and spend and increase the American people’s dependency on government so the Democrats can stay in power.

None of the Democratic candidates seem to have a clue as to how wealth is created, how to run a business, how markets and the economy work. They are four lawyers who like to talk but produce nothing any American wants to purchase. They are boring, unimpressive and simply not qualified to be President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief.

The Republican candidates were more impressive by far.

Most interesting was the position of the Republican candidates on illegal immigration and what should be done about it.

The Republican establishment was represented by Senator John McCain and former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani.

Look– Senator McCain and Mayor Giuliani, you are still not getting it when it comes to immigration.

Yes the American people want border security first with two fences with a road in between and regular border patrols to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, terrorists, drugs, crime, and gangs into the United States. They want border security now!

Concurrently the American people want all 20 to 30 million illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin–largely Mexico. They want criminal alien removal. Stop arguing about what is or is not amnesty. They are all criminals and should be removed and deported–cut the rubbish about paying a $5000 fine is not amnesty. Send all illegal immigrants or criminal aliens back now!

The American elites of both the Republican and Democratic Parties are heavily invested in both Open Borders and the current Federal Tax system. The American people do not want either!

Cutting Federal taxes only to have local, city, county, and state taxes go up significantly to pay for illegal immigrant education, welfare services, medical and hospital care, jails, prisons, etc is not fooling the American people.

President Bush, Senator McCain and Rudy Guiliani represent the Republican Party elite or establishment position. All of the Democratic Party candidates support the Open Border and existing Federal Tax system.

Unfortunately for them, the American people want a Border Security Fence, criminal alien removal and a consumption tax–The FairTax to replace the exisiting Federal tax system based on income.

NumbersUSA’s Roy Beck assesses both Republican and Democratic candidates on the Immigration issues.

“…ABI NEVER ENDORSES CANDIDATES. Our highlighting of some candidates is to help citizens know who is most likely to work for reducing overall immigration so citizens can factor that information into their voting decisions. But we realize that voters mark their ballot based on many issues and judgments about the character and leadership of a candidate. We don’t presume to suggest the best candidate for your overall needs and interests. And, Americans for Better Immigration is strictly non-partisan, with no preference for one party or another. …”

Republican Presidential Candidates On Immigration Issues

“…ROY BECK’S CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING: “I look at these candidates ONLY in terms of what they have done about immigration and what they are promising to do on the issue.

“I grade all these candidates on how well they promise to carry out the recommendations of two national commissions in the 1990s and on other widely accepted goals for reducing overall illegal and legal immigration. …”

Apparently the moderators of the debate nor the Democratic Party candidates wanted to discuss either legal or illegal immigration. Check out Roy Beck’s assessment and you will see why.

On the issue of both legal and illegal immigration, the candidates that closely reflect the views of the American people include the following:

Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, Duncan Hunter and Alan Keyes– have excellent ratings on most of the immigration issues.

Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee having mostly good to excellent ratings on immigration issues.

John McCain and Rudy Giuiani have mostly bad to abysmal ratings on immigration issues.

The Democratic candidates all have bad to abysmal ratings on immigration issues.

If President Bush could run for a third term I suspect he would also have bad to abysmal ratings on immigration issues. President Bush favors open borders.

The second issue that divides the American elites from the American people is the need to reform and replace the existing Federal income tax system with a Federal consumption or sales tax–The Fair Tax:

http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer

If the FairTax were passed by Congress and you were President, would you sign the bill into law?

http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=news_presScorecard

The Presidential candidates who have said yes to the above question include the following:

Republicans: Mike Huckabee, Ducan Hunter, Alan Keyes, Ron Paul

Democrats: Mike Gravel

Fred Thompson was initially attracted to the FairTax but is now noncommital based on the advice of Larry Lindsay.

All of the other candidates would not sign the FairTax bill.

The next President of the United States will be that candidate of either party who is right on both the illegal immigration and FairTax issues and supports what the American people want and not what the American elites expouse.

Currently only the following candidates are right on both issues:

Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, and Ron Paul.

As a long-time member of the conservative movement and libertarian, my first choice for candidate for President of the United States is Fred Thompson. While Fred is solid on immigration issues, I am very disappointed that he backed away from the FairTax.

I suspect that if he had came out vigorously for the FairTax like Mike Huckabee did in Iowa and New Hampshire, he would have won in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

Please Fred stop listening to Larry Lindsey and back the FairTax. Lindsey was very wrong on how much the Iraq war would cost–$200 billion–it is going to be closer to 1,000 billion and could even be higher!

I was a big supportor of Steve Forbes’ Flat Tax but I have since switched to the FairTax. The reason is quite simple. The American people including Fred Thompson’s  friend, Larry Lindsey, do not understand the very complex Federal tax system and hate wasting valuable time trying to fill out Federal tax returns each year.

The Presidential candidate who gets the immigration and FairTax issues right will be the next President of the United States of America!
