His reign is all smoke and mirrors, devoid of substances, consisting of mere appearances and mass delusions. In the aftermath of his regime – the narcissistic leader having died, been deposed, or voted out of office – it all unravels. The tireless and constant prestidigitation ceases and the entire edifice crumbles. What looked like an economic miracle turns out to have been a fraud-laced bubble. Loosely-held empires disintegrate. Laboriously assembled business conglomerates go to pieces. “Earth shattering” and “revolutionary” scientific discoveries and theories are discredited. Social experiments end in mayhem.
It is important to understand that the use of violence must be ego-syntonic. It must accord with the self-image of the narcissist. It must abet and sustain his grandiose fantasies and feed his sense of entitlement. It must conform with the narcissistic narrative.
Thus, a narcissist who regards himself as the benefactor of the poor, a member of the common folk, the representative of the disenfranchised, the champion of the dispossessed against the corrupt elite – is highly unlikely to use violence at first.
The pacific mask crumbles when the narcissist has become convinced that the very people he purported to speak for, his constituency, his grassroots fans, the prime sources of his narcissistic supply – have turned against him. At first, in a desperate effort to maintain the fiction underlying his chaotic personality, the narcissist strives to explain away the sudden reversal of sentiment. “The people are being duped by (the media, big industry, the military, the elite, etc.)”, “they don’t really know what they are doing”, “following a rude awakening, they will revert to form”, etc.
When these flimsy attempts to patch a tattered personal mythology fail – the narcissist is injured. Narcissistic injury inevitably leads to narcissistic rage and to a terrifying display of unbridled aggression. The pent-up frustration and hurt translate into devaluation. That which was previously idealized – is now discarded with contempt and hatred.
This primitive defense mechanism is called “splitting”. To the narcissist, things and people are either entirely bad (evil) or entirely good. He projects onto others his own shortcomings and negative emotions, thus becoming a totally good object. A narcissistic leader is likely to justify the butchering of his own people by claiming that they intended to kill him, undo the revolution, devastate the economy, or the country, etc.
The “small people”, the “rank and file”, the “loyal soldiers” of the narcissist – his flock, his nation, his employees – they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder. …”

“…It’s not unlike – I use the Civil War analogy because it’s relevant here. In the Civil War a lot of those young men came out of West Point in the class of ‘46 and went to Mexico and fought together. General Grant and General Lee fought on the same side. General Longstreet, who was Lee’s number two, was best man at Grant’s wedding. They all knew each other from class. They knew who could ride a horse, who could draw a battlefield, who could command troops in the field. They knew how things worked. Everybody in television knows each other and on any given day some people play better than others, some people get lucky, whatever. What that does is it makes the margin of success a very narrow field.
We’re going into a 90-million-home competitor with a 17-year head start who has spent the last two years making decisions to get ready for us. You know, the Germans had the high ground at Normandy and you know what? Our guys did alright. I just figure, you know, the fight will begin. I feel confident our folks are ready for it.
We’re not particularly targeting CNBC. CNBC does a narrow kind of programming. Unless they do what they could do which is jump us with a whole lot of Wall Street Journal stuff, programming. If they do that, the good stuff will eventually become mine. Cause they’re my R and D department. …”

“…Well, its amazing what difference a couple of months make at a cable news network isn’t it. Roger Ailes has clearly been going after big hitters in what is viewed as an attempt to turn around the fortunes of the lacklustre channel. He could probably hear the chuckles of the CNBC executives in the bars of Manhattan celebrating the crushing of yet another business network. With the exception of Bloomberg Television, CNBC’s form seems to be, beat them or buy them. Only a month or two ago, Fox Business Network looked all but beaten. …”
“…Cue another high profile addition to the Fox Business line-up. Jon Stossel of ABC’s 20/20 fame. Surely he’s going to be a ratings winner and bring in more viewers from the wilderness? That’s still a maybe, but what would be a dramatic steal, and could possibly re-ignite the FBN Versus CNBC war once again, would be Lou Dobbs. Ailes had dinner with Dobbs, and Dobbs is having a tough time at CNN at the moment, and could be looking for a way out. He’s also a veteran business journalist and presenter, with decades of experience in the field. He also has a loyal following. I’d fully expect that those viewers that he lost when his Moneyline programme disappeared down the ether, would come back to him if he was fronting another business show.
Roger Ailes appears to be building a ratings winning team, which will challenge CNBC’s dominance in real terms. A battle between FBN and CNBC for viewers, only adds to the business sector excitement that the Bloomberg and Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones battle is already providing.”
