RIP – L. William “Bill” Seidman

“…L. William Seidman was chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) from 1985-1991. From 1989-1991 he was the first chairman of the Resolution Trust Company (RTC). From 1982-1985 he was dean of the College of Business at Arizona State University. From 1977-1982 he was chief financial officer and Director of Phelps Dodge, Inc. From 1982-1984 he served as President Reagan’s co-chair of the White House Conference on Productivity and from 1974-1976 he was assistant to President Gerald Ford for U.S. Economic Affairs. From 1968-1974 he was chief executive officer of Seidman and Seidman (now BDO Seidman), Certified Public Accountants.

During World War II Mr. Seidman served in the U.S. Navy as a communications officer on a destroyer and received the Bronze Star for service in the invasion of the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Mr. Seidman received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, his law degree from Harvard University, and his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. He is presently publisher of Bank Director magazine and chief commentator of CNBC-TV, and has served as a consultant to the World Bank, Deposit Corporation of Japan, Morgan Stanley (Asia), Ernst & Young, Nippon Credit Bank, Freddie Mac, and the Capital Group. He is currently a member of the board of directors of InteliData, Inc., Fiserv, Inc., Clark/Bardes, Quepasa.com., GMAC Mortgage, and LML Systems. …”

“…L. William Seidman is an American economist and financial commentator.

Born April, 29, 1921 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wife Sally Seidman. Six children.

Seidman received his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College, his law degree from Harvard University, and his MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Seidman began working in United States government as an economic advisor to President Gerald Ford from 1974 to 1976, and later in a related capacity to President Ronald Reagan from 1982-1984. In 1985, he became the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and served until 1991, working extensively during the American savings and loan crisis to restore solvency to the failing savings and loan sector of American banking. He was the first chairman of the related agency, the Resolution Trust Corporation, which was created specifically to address issues arising from the savings and loan crisis, from 1989 until his retirement from active government in 1991.

He currently works as a chief financial commentator for the CNBC network, as well as an occasional speaker at various financial conferences worldwide. Seidman also joined SecondMarket, Inc. in December 2008 and serves as a senior advisor to the firm[1]. In 2005, he debated former Vice-President Al Gore on economic matters at one such conference. …”
