“One of the most notable economists and social philosophers of the twentieth century, Ludwig von Mises, in the course of a long and highly productive life, developed an integrated, deduct­ive science of economics based on the fundamental axiom that in­dividual human beings act purposively to achieve desired goals. Even though his economic analysis itself was “value-free” — in the sense of being irrelevant to values held by economists — Mises concluded that the only viable economic policy for the human race was a policy of unrestricted laissez-faire, of free markets and the unhampered exercise of the right of private property, with government strictly limited to the defense of person and property within its territorial area.

For Mises was able to demonstrate (a) that the expansion of free markets, the division of labor, and private capital investment is the only possible path to the prosperity and flourishing of the human race; (b) that socialism would be disastrous for a modern economy because the absence of private ownership of land and capital goods prevents any sort of rational pricing, or estimate of costs, and (c) that government intervention, in addition to hampering and crippling the market, would prove counter-productive and cumulative, leading inevitably to socialism unless the entire tissue of interventions was repealed. …”

The only reason President Obama brings up global warming is that global warming or climate change is the “story” used to justify more taxes in the form of cap and trade and more government regulation of cars.

The majority of the American people believe that man does not cause global warming.


The American people are unwilling to pay higher prices for goods and services should a carbon tax or a cap and trade tax ever be implemented.

Now if the President were serious, he would not only lower the temperature to 72 in the Oval Office but also cut the White House staff to that President Roosevelt had. Better yet President Lincoln had a very small staff, I believe it was 2 and not 1,700 plus.

“…Last week, Barack Obama caused quite a stir when he allowed himself to be photographed in the Oval Office without wearing a suit jacket, ending the Bush tradition of coat-and-tie for the West Wing.  The New York Times reports on how Obama made that possible during a colder-than-usual Washington winter.  All Obama did was turn up the thermostat to Hawaii hothouse levels:

The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.

“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

Thus did a rule of the George W. Bush administration — coat and tie in the Oval Office at all times — fall by the wayside, only the first of many signs that a more informal culture is growing up in the White House under new management. Mr. Obama promised to bring change to Washington and he has — not just in substance, but in presidential style.

And thus did the Times fall down on the job yet again in the Age of Obama …”

U.S., European Bank Stocks Rise on ’Bad Bank’ Plan (Update2)

“…The Obama administration’s plan may instead set up a so-called bad bank to absorb the hard-to-value holdings that have prevented many lenders from making new loans.

“The fact that they laid out a good bank/bad bank scenario means the nationalization of Citibank and Bank of America that people are worried about is less of a possibility,” said Warren Koontz, head of large-cap value stocks at Loomis Sayles & Co. in Boston. “The rolling fear that started with Citigroup and spread to Bank of America seems to have stopped for now.”

The KBW Bank Index of 24 U.S. banking companies climbed 14 percent, trimming this year’s decline to 26 percent. …”

“…Think about this bailout thing for a moment.  We are told that the problem is a credit crunch – a lack of lendable funds, or a lack of willingness to lend them.  The solution would therefore seem to lie in coaxing money from the relatively asset-rich to the relatively asset-poor.

How would you do that?  Our government is doing it with huge bailouts, an $850 billion bailout under President Bush and an $825 billion or so stimulus under President Obama, on top of all the other bailouts for AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc.  Multiple trillions of dollars.


Where does the government get this money?  It doesn’t have it on hand, not by a long shot; it already owed the public over $5 trillion before this all started.  Answer: it borrows it.

That’s right.  When the problem is lack of borrowable money, the federal government steps in and borrows a few trillion more.  Let’s be clear: the government said the problem was lack of supply, so it increases the demand by trillions?


This makes zero sense to me.  The government will be borrowing from lender A to give to lender B.  It would be better if we could simply get A to lend to B directly and therefore avoid the middleman.  This also makes me wonder if we’d be better off having lender A provide a loan to himself.  (I’m not so sure that’s not happening.)


But not all the bailout money is even going to lenders.  That “stimulus” money will therefore do nothing for a credit crunch, but will simply dish out money to Americans that was borrowed from other Americans, to be paid back by future Americans.  Are we supposed to thank the government for forcing us to borrow money from ourselves?  Doesn’t the idea that this will benefit us defy some law of thermodynamics?

How does borrowing by the government help other borrowers, the supposed intent of fixing a credit crunch?  Talk about “crowding out.”  This is Godzilla “crowding out” Bambi. …”

“…Here is what makes sense to me.

  • Financial markets are strange and complex things.  They have cyclical behavior, bubbles and bursts.  And no one understands them.  No one.
  • Politicians and their appointees know they must be perceived as knowledgeable and in control, or else they’ll have to work for a living like us peons.  Some go so far as to fool even themselves that they are knowledgeable and in control.
  • Since most of us know we are ignorant and powerless in such things as financial markets, we like to believe that at least someone else isn’t.  So when people say they know something, we tend to believe them.  PhD’s from Harvard help.

Didn’t you ever wonder if the witch doctors themselves thought dropping a virgin in the volcano would really bring good crops?  I’m thinking they didn’t.  But it kept them in their witch-doctor jobs and gave them a few final moments in private with the virgins.

And that, boys and girls, is how government works. …”

Stimulus slush fund for the housing entitlement mob

House GOP Leader John Boehner on Monday rightly sounded the alarm over billions in stimulus tax dollars that could potentially go to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. But the Republican leadership has only scratched the surface over what amounts to a bottomless slush fund for a bigger coalition of housing entitlement thugs. ACORN, you may recall, is the Chicago-based left-wing activist group with longtime ties to community organizer-turned-President Obama. The non-profit, which now takes in 40 percent of its revenues from American taxpayers after four decades on the public teat, has a history of engaging in voter fraud, corporate shakedowns, partisan bullying, and pro-illegal immigration lobbying. The Democrats’ stimulus proposals could make the group — and its lesser-known, even more radical ideological allies — eligible for upwards of $5 billion in new public cash. …”


Soros: ‘Bad Bank’ for Troubled Assets Is Bad Idea

“…Billionaire financier George Soros told CNBC he disagrees with plans to create a new government entity to buy up troubled bank loans and believes former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson mis-managed the first rescue attempt of financial institutions.



“That (the “bad bank” proposal) will help relieve the situation, but it will not be sufficient to turn it around,” Soros said during a live interview at the Davos economic conference in Switzerland. Instead, Soros said he would create a “good bank” and re-capitalize the good assets.

He admitted his alternative plan is not likely to get support because it too closely approaches nationalization. “The political will to do that is not there,” he said.

As to Paulson’s handling of the first half of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout fund known as TARP, Soros said the money was used “capriciously and haphazardly.” He said half of it has now been wasted, and the rest will need to be used to plug holes. …”



Billions more needed for financial rescue


“…Looming above these is a proposal to set up a federal bank – dubbed a “bad bank” – that would buy troubled assets clogging financial institutions’ balance sheets. This would free the institutions to lend money and would entice wary investors back into the market, proponents say.

But the government will have to commit far more money than policymakers were discussing even a few weeks ago.

“I think we’re talking hundreds of billions of dollars,” said Brian Gardner, an analyst with the research firm Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. “I don’t think there’s anyone who doubts the administration will be going back to the Hill for more than the $350 billion” recently released from this fall’s $700 billion bailout package.

The International Monetary Fund wrote in a report Wednesday that losses from banks in the U.S. and Europe already have topped $1 trillion and could reach $2.2 trillion.

At that rate, the banks will require “at least half a trillion dollars” to remain solvent, the report says.

Congressional Democrats have been seeking advice from economist Mark Zandi, who said he is pushing a three-point plan for banks that includes more capital infusions, guarantees against losses on bad assets and a “bad bank” to buy distressed assets.

“They should use all three of those tools aggressively,” said Zandi, of Moody’s “If they are able to establish a marketplace for those assets, the benefits could be readily apparent.”

Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Sheila Bair has mentioned the “bad bank” proposal in a series of interviews as one option the government should consider. …”

“…A better approach would be to do what the government did with zombie savings and loans at the end of the 1980s: it seized the defunct banks, cleaning out the shareholders. Then it transferred their bad assets to a special institution, the Resolution Trust Corporation; paid off enough of the banks’ debts to make them solvent; and sold the fixed-up banks to new owners.

The current buzz suggests, however, that policy makers aren’t willing to take either of these approaches. Instead, they’re reportedly gravitating toward a compromise approach: moving toxic waste from private banks’ balance sheets to a publicly owned “bad bank” or “aggregator bank” that would resemble the Resolution Trust Corporation, but without seizing the banks first.

Sheila Bair, the chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, recently tried to describe how this would work: “The aggregator bank would buy the assets at fair value.” But what does “fair value” mean?

Going Green=Going Broke…


Al Gore is a laughing stock among the majority of the American people.

He is a fanatic and liar and is therefore dangerous to American economy to the extent his policy recommendations are implemented.

Thousands of scientists disagreed with his so-called “consensus” or the “science is settled” lie repeated by him and now President Obama.

Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant and man is not the primary cause of global warming by increasing his carbon emissions.

He will not debate his critics for the simple reason he would lose and he knows it.

Gore will give interviews only to big media that agree with him and usually with interviewers that do not understand even the basics of climate change or global warming.

Climate has and is changing all the time.

Man is not a primary cause of climate change or warming.

To suggest that man can significantly change climate and overcome the primary drivers of climate change is misleading.

The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.The U.S. Senate report is the latest evidence of the growing groundswell of scientific opposition rising to challenge the UN and Gore. Scientific meetings are now being dominated by a growing number of skeptical scientists.

One thing good about the current financial crisis is it has forced the delay of expensive and useless caps on CO2 production. In order to reverse the CO2 production of an ever increasingly modern world (modern life styles require energy and produce CO2) would cost trillions of dollars and hamper economic growth for a generation. The only other option is to shrink the world’s population – and that is not going to happen.

And now the data shows it would all be for nothing. The current economic situation has thankfully delayed any talk from the Democrats of such nonsense. …”

“…Most importantly, as long as we continue to depend on dirty fossil fuels like coal and oil to meet our energy needs, and dump 70 million tons of global warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, we move closer and closer to several dangerous tipping points which scientists have repeatedly warned – again just yesterday – will threaten to make it impossible for us to avoid irretrievable destruction of the conditions that make human civilization possible on this planet.

We’re borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that’s got to change.

For years our efforts to address the growing climate crisis have been undermined by the idea that we must choose between our planet and our way of life; between our moral duty and our economic well being. These crucial investments will create millions of new jobs and hasten our economic recovery – while strengthening our national security and beginning to solve the climate crisis. …”

Kerry and Gore give global warming skeptics cold shoulder

“…The Al Gore global warming hearing is taking place right now in D.C. as a light freezing drizzle falls. John Kerry wagged his waggy finger at global warming skeptics:

Former Vice President Al Gore told lawmakers Wednesday morning that the earth is in “grave danger” and that the nation must break its dependence on oil.

In prepared remarks before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Gore urged quick passage of President Obama’s stimulus package.

“Climate change will be increasingly central to our foreign policy and national security, and it will be a focal point of this committee’s efforts as well,”said Sen. John Kerry, the committee chairman and the Democratic party’s 2004 pick for president.

Mr. Kerry dismissed the icy weather which framed Mr. Gore’s global warming remarks Wednesday morning.

“And to the naysayers and deniers still out there, let me add: A little snow in Washington does nothing to diminish the reality of this crisis,” he said. …”

President Obama made a big mistake when he suggested that Republicans stop listening to Rush Limbaugh.

A very big mistake for many reasons on many levels.

Rush is right. The Republican Party has not been listening to him for several years and they have been losing elections.

Since I listen to several talk shows including Rush, when a President attacks or criticises a talk show host, he is indirectly attacking their loyal listeners.

Most talk show listeners are likely voters that will remember when the next election comes around.

I am on the same page as Bill, Neal, Glen, Rush, Sean, Mark, Laura, Michael, John , and Monica just to name a few, that also hope that President Obama  completely fails in his attempt to implement his socialist agenda.  President Obama is an economy wrecker and job destroyer.

I do not want to get along with Democrats, I want to defeat them!

He rejects the idea that talk radio is strictly conservative territory, though.

“American talk radio is not all right-wing political chatter. There’s a lot of diversity. Sure, we have our conservative stars. We’ve also got liberal talkers, or people like George Noory covering the paranormal and Kim Kommando on computers,” Mr. Harrison said. …”

She was saying they were stupid. These people whose job it was to allocate capital apparently didn’t even know how to manage their own. …”

[3] As such, it is the long-held policy of the US government to protect the biggest American companies responsible for transportation–airliners, petrol companies, etc– from failure through subsidies and low-interest loans, or, in other words, through bailing them out. These companies, among others, are deemed “too big to fail” because their goods and services are considered by the government to be constant universal necessities in maintaining the nation’s welfare and often, indirectly, its security.[4] [5]

Emergency-type government bailouts can be controversial. Debates raged in 2008 over if and how to bailout the failing auto industry in the United States. Those against it, like pro-free market radio personality Hugh Hewitt, saw this bailout as an unacceptable passing-of-the-buck to taxpayers. He denounced any bailout for the Big Three, arguing that mismanagement caused the companies to fail, and they now deserve to be dismantled organically by the free-market forces so that entrepreneurs may arise from the ashes; that the bailout signals lower business standards for giant companies by incentivizing risk, creating moral hazard through the assurance of safety nets (that others will pay for) that ought not be, but unfortunately are, considered in business equations; and that a bailout promotes centralized bureaucracy by allowing government powers to choose the terms of the bailout. Others, such as Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, and economist Jeffrey Sachs [6], characterized this particular bailout a necessary evil and argued that the probable incompetence in management of the car companies is insufficient reason to let them fail completely and risk disturbing the (current) delicate economic state of the United States, since up to three million jobs rest on the solvency of the Big Three and things are bleak enough as it is. In any case, the bones of contention here can be generalized to represent the issues at large, namely the virtues of private enterprise versus those of central planning, and the dangers of a free market’s volatility versus the those of socialist bureaucracy.

Governments around the world have bailed out their nations businesses with some frequency since the early 20th century. In general, the needs of the entity/entities bailed out are subordinate to the needs of the state. …”

Pelosi was also asked about some of the more controversial spending in the stimulus package, including hundreds of millions to expand family planning services.

“The family planning services reduce cost,” Pelosi said. “One of the elements of this package is assistance to the states. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those — one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”


Having more babies increases the population and labor force and usually results in more not less economic growth–for example the baby boomers born in the US between 1946 and 1964 resulted in significant wealth creation in the United States.

When you increase the labor force and productivity you usually produce more.

While family planning with contraception or abortion may reduce government spending, it reduces the labor supply and results in less growth.

If you really want to cut state, county, city costs as well as taxes, stop paying for illegal immigrants that are crowding our schools, hospitals, jails, prisons, roads and send them all home to their country of origin.

Build a triple fence across the entire border with Mexico to slow if not stop further illegal immigration.

Start right now.

This would be a two-fer in that it would also cut unemployment rates when those employing illegal immigrants must replace them with unemployed American Citizens.

I dare the elites of both political parties to propose this.

The elites do not give a damn about unemployed Americans.

Every day I pass construction sites that have anywhere between 50% to 75% illegal immigrants employed as construction workers.

All of these jobs used to be done by American citizens including blacks, hispanics and whites.

Wakeup America!

You are being sold down the river by the likes of the above.

I vote evil for her.

“…The growing violence in Mexico is largely attributed to battles between the major drug groups operating in Mexico, including the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels, and the fracturing that has taken place as leaders are arrested and factions have vied to assert control over lucrative smuggling routes.

Violence has even spilled over to the US. This weekend, a US Border Patrol agent was killed by a suspected drug smuggler when he tried to stop their fleeing Hummer.

The US has hailed the Calderón administration’s efforts. In response to the arrest of the alleged Sinaloa cartel leader, Alfredo Beltrán Leyva, US Ambassador Tony Garza said in a statement: “When Mexico takes dangerous criminals like Beltrán Leyva and his crew off the streets, the people of the United States also benefit.”

US Attorney General Mukasey pledged to help stop the flow of US guns into Mexico, which has long been blamed for the spectacular gun wars that often break out across this country.

He said US authorities are giving their Mexican counterparts more access to electronic databases to help trace weapons and plan to introduce a Spanish edition of the database soon.

Not all observers welcome a heavy hand from the north. Mr. Tirado says that cooperation is crucial, but worries that Mexico is reacting to what the US wants. “If you do not have a bilateral perspective, and are only following the north, you are not taking an integral approach,” he says.

“…Documents released by the Senate Finance Committee strongly suggest that Geithner knew, or should have known, what he was doing when he did not pay self-employment taxes in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. After his failure to pay was discovered, first by the IRS and later during the vetting process, Geithner paid the federal government a total of $42,702 in taxes and interest.

The IMF did not withhold state and federal income taxes or self-employment taxes — Social Security and Medicare — from its employees’ paychecks. But the IMF took great care to explain to those employees, in detail and frequently, what their tax responsibilities were. First, each employee was given the IMF Employee Tax Manual. Then, employees were given quarterly wage statements for the specific purpose of calculating taxes. Then, they were given year-end wage statements. And then, each IMF employee was required to file what was known as an Annual Tax Allowance Request. Geithner received all those documents.

The tax allowance has turned out to be a key part of the Geithner situation. This is how it worked. IMF employees were expected to pay their taxes out of their own money. But the IMF then gave them an extra allowance, known as a “gross-up,” to cover those tax payments. This was done in the Annual Tax Allowance Request, in which the employee filled out some basic information — marital status, dependent children, etc. — and the IMF then estimated the amount of taxes the employee would owe and gave the employee a corresponding allowance.

At the end of the tax allowance form were the words, “I hereby certify that all the information contained herein is true to the best of my knowledge and belief and that I will pay the taxes for which I have received tax allowance payments from the Fund.” Geithner signed the form. He accepted the allowance payment. He didn’t pay the tax. For several years in a row. …”

The Associated Press and other media outlets relentlessly drone on about tax “discrepancies,” “tax goofs,” and the nomination’s supposed inevitability. Geithner’s partial reimbursements for taxes he didn’t pay and the related false attestations, which York obtained from Senate sources, are being ignored. There is no chance that a GOP president could nominate someone with Geithner’s tax problems for any cabinet position, let alone Treasury secretary, and get such a pass from the press.

3. Possible press conflicts of interest

Cliff Kincaid at Accuracy in Media points out that some press outlets are parts of larger firms with financial stakes in the financial bailout. Example: General Electric, which owns NBC, also owns bailout recipient GE Capital. GE CEO Jeffrey Inmelt is also on the New York Fed’s board.

2. Disparate treatment of previously pulled nominees

Zoe Baird (Clinton, 1993), Kimba Wood (Clinton, 1993), and Linda Chavez (Bush, 2001) all had relatively minor or potential issues with self-employment taxes on household help. Geithner’s unpaid amounts were exponentially larger. Is there a whiff of male chauvinism in the air?

No president in my lifetime would have dared to nominate Geithner. But “44″ Obama calls Geithner’s problems a mere “embarrassment.”

It leaves you wondering if anyone in Washington knows or cares about the difference between right and wrong. We’re expected to overlook Geithner’s problems because he is supposedly the only person in a nation of 200 million adults who can do the job. Give me a break.

If he really knows the pertinent facts, Barack Obama’s ringing defense of Geithner should cause the American people to question his fundamental “judgment to lead.” …”

Bot or Human Political Correctness On Youtube?

While I have been a big fan of Youtube, I recently ran across this video:




In going back to old blog posts I have noticed a similiar pattern.

I will illustrate a point with one or more videos that have been posted on YouTube that I have embedded on my blog post.

Increasingly when the user clicks on the video to play it, a message is displayed that the video has been deleted by the user or deleted for copyright infringement.

Since almost all the posts were critical of now President Obama, I started to do some checking.

In most cases the video was still on Youtube, but now with a slightly different title.

The user apparently did not delete the video, YouTube did for whatever reason.

Looks like we have either a leftist bot or human playing the political correctness game of censorship.

Keep it up and those posting videos on YouTube will find another place to post their videos.

Did someone call Google or YouTube from either the Obama campaign or from the Democratic Party and request the video be deleted?

Or did the Obama campaign call their friends at the networks and request they call YouTube?

Time for some answers.

We are watching.

Railing against YouTube, two Republican White House veterans have launched QubeTV as a conservative alternative.”The 2008 campaign will be dominated by video and in particular by user-generated video,” says QubeTV founder Charlie Gerow, a former aide in the Ronald Reagan White House.

“There are a vast array of young conservative activists and operatives out there armed with cell phones or hand-helds that are going to capture the next ‘macaca’ moment or John Kerry bad joke and put them on Qube TV,” says Gerow, whose Pennsylvania strategic media firm, Quantum Communications, created the Web site.

Gerow insists YouTube banned a video by conservative blogger Michelle Malkin about radical Islamists.

Responding to that incident, a statement on the Web site reads: “We fly the conservative flag here at QubeTV, and we will not be about banning or deleting conservatives.”

YouTube takes issue with Gerow’s assertion that the site is banning conservative content.

“That’s flat out incorrect,” says a spokesman for YouTube, who asked not to be identified by name.

A statement provided to ABC News by YouTube elaborated: “Our site provides an equal opportunity for both sides of the political spectrum and embraces voter interaction with the candidates with no regard to party affiliation.”

YouTube says its users, not YouTube employees, police the site. However, if users flag inappropriate content, YouTube managers review it and remove the offending video from the site. …”

EFF Gets Involved in Election Video Takedown Spat

“… The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is going after several television networks for issuing YouTube takedown notices on campaign videos.

EFF on Monday penned a letter to CBS, Fox, NBC Universal, and the Christian Broadcasting Network, and asked that they stop issuing Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notices on campaign videos posted to YouTube.

“It is our sincere hope that, in the final days of this election season, you will stop sending DMCA takedown notices that target the use of short clips of news footage in election-related videos, whether posted by the presidential campaigns or by individual citizens expressing their views,” wrote Fred von Lohmann, a senior intellectual property attorney at EFF.

Republican presidential hopeful John McCain’s campaign last week sent a letter to YouTube requesting that it give a “full legal review” to all DMCA takedown notices aimed at videos from political candidates and campaign.

YouTube later rejected that request, but EFF said the problem is not with the video hosting site but with the networks that issue the takedown requests in the first place.

The McCain campaign identified CBS, CBN, and Fox as copyright owners who have targeted political videos on YouTube, while NBC has admitted to submitting takedown notices for videos from the Obama campaign, von Lohmann wrote.

“We understand your organizations’ desire to be seen as neutral, but given the extremely short nature of the clips at issue and the context in which these clips appear, it is unlikely that anyone would believe that the use of the clips by a candidate means that your organizations are somehow supporting that candidate,” he said.

Activist Groups Push Nets to Keep Political Videos on YouTube

“…Public-interest groups are calling on some TV networks to quit making copyright claims that force YouTube to take down pointed videos from presidential candidates and political activists during the last weeks of the campaign.

In letters today to CBS, Fox, NBC Universal, the Christian Broadcast Network and YouTube, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, Public Knowledge and the Stanford Fair Use Project reiterated their position that use of less than 10 seconds of the candidates’ TV appearances in the videos furthers democracy and should be “fair use” and not subject to copyright claims all the time. The letters also asked the networks at least not to make any requests in the campaign’s closing days.

“As we enter the final days of election season, we call on each of your organizations to stop sending notices. … Not only are such notices contrary to law, but they also threaten to silence an exciting new source of political expression,” said the letter, signed by Fred von Lohmann, senior intellectual property attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Both the public-interest groups and some political campaigns have complained that the four networks have made copyright claims that are too broad, prompting YouTube to remove videos that should remain publicly available.

On Oct. 13, the McCain-Palin campaign complained some of the copyright requests were “overreaching.” The campaign said then the requests have resulted in “the removal of non-infringing campaign videos from YouTube, thus silencing political speech.”

Mr. von Lohmann’s letter today dismissed the networks’ worries that the appearance of their video in clips would make the networks seem partisan.

“We understand your organizations’ desire to be seen as neutral, but given the extremely short nature of the clips at issue and the context in which these clips appear, it is unlikely that anyone would believe the use of the clips by a candidate means that your organizations are somehow supporting the candidate,” said the letter. …”

"...Finally, he and his wife, Michelle Sites, also an IT consultant, decided to take a page from the Daemon playbook and infiltrate the Internet's power grid. In fall 2006, they approached bloggers whose writings on gaming, warfare, AI, and social media Suarez had mined for the book. The couple formed their own publishing firm, Verdugo Press, and began producing copies through the print-on-demand service Lightning Source.

A dozen or so bloggers wrote posts about the book, kindling sales of up to 50 copies a month. Then in April 2007, Rick Klau, head of publisher services at Feedburner, got a copy. Two things happened: Google acquired Feedburner, and Klau, electrified by Daemon's all-too-plausible IT scenario, began pushing the book on anyone who would listen.

"I just felt it would be a travesty if a lot of people didn't read it," Klau says. A new colleague at Google, algorithm wrangler Matt Cutts, gave Daemon a shout-out on his blog. Cyberwar pundit John Robb mentioned it on his site, and Ito wrote that it was "believable and realistic and still mind-blowing." Brand blurbed it on Amazon, saying Suarez was "better than early Tom Clancy." As of March, more than 1,200 copies had been shipped, and Zeraus nee Suarez is planning to release a sequel, Freedom™, later this year. "When I finished the book," Brand says, "my feeling was that the sequel is not only desirable, but necessary."  ..."

The Beach Boys are an American rock band. Formed in 1961, the group gained popularity for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a California youth culture of cars and surfing. Brian Wilson’s growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians.[1]

The group initially comprised singer-musician-composer Brian Wilson, his brothers, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. This core quintet, along with early member David Marks and later bandmate Bruce Johnston, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1988. The Beach Boys have often been called “America’s Band”[2][3][4], and has stated that “the band’s unerring ability… made them America’s first, best rock band.”[1] The group has had thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number one singles.[1] Rolling Stone magazine listed The Beach Boys as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[5] According to Billboard, in terms of singles and album sales, The Beach Boys are the No. 1 selling American band of all time.[6]

Many changes in both musical styles and personnel have occurred during their career, notably because of Brian Wilson’s mental illness and drug use (leading to his eventual withdrawal from the group) and the deaths of Dennis and Carl Wilson in 1983 and 1998, respectively. Extensive legal battles between members of the group have also played their part. After the death of Carl Wilson, founding member Al Jardine was ousted by fellow-founding member Mike Love. As of 2008, The Beach Boys continue to tour, with a lineup of Love, Johnston and a backing band of new musicians. Love retained the rights to the Beach Boys name after a legal dispute.[4] Al Jardine and Brian Wilson also continue to tour with their own respective backing bands, as of 2008. All three groups continue to play Beach Boys hits.

History is Made – White House Website Changes to Obama


While Barack Obama was taking the oath of office, the radical socialist had his staff put up the new White House web site:

Many conservatives commented about how President Obama’s inauguration speech had many ideas that they could applaud and support.

Obama’s speech may be the “Reagan Mask” used to seduce Republicans to provide support for Obama’s proposed legislation.

Time to ripe off the mask and confront reality by pointing out exactly what President Obama stands for.

The next time they call you a racist or play the “race card” for stating his policies, just call him a radical socialist–an accurate description.

  • Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. President Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, President Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.
  • Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
  • Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
  • Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: President Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.
  • Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell: President Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. The President will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.  …”

When it comes to President Obama I recommend you ignore what he says and follow what legislation he proposes for Congress to pass.

  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars — cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon — on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050. …”

President Obama has drinked the Al Gore “kool aid” of man-made global warming requiring a new cap and trade tax .

If passed such a cap and trade tax  would significantly increase every American’s electrical bill, cost of heating oil and spending on gasoline.

The cost of goods and services would also increase since they too require energy in the form of electricity, heating and transportation.

A command and control economy where the central government picks winners and losers destroyed both the Soviet and Chinese economies.

Seems like the radical socialists in the White House are now trying to destroy the US economy with their new age religion of global warming based on the junk science of computer climate models. Global warming has now changed to climate change, given the recent decline in global temperatures.

Stop using taxpayer’s hard earned money to subsidize with tax credits alternative energy sources such as wind turbines, solar, and geothermal.

Let the American people choose the most affordable source of their electricity and what type of cars and trucks they want to drive.

Mind your own business and stop meddling.

Leave the American people and economy alone.

Lawyers do not know how to run businesses and economies.

Federal government intervention in the home mortage market is primarily responsible for this recession together with years of Federal deficit spending and its impact on the value of the dollar and the cost of gasoline. 

When major cities and urban areas experience brown-outs and black-outs and a prolonged recession, they will dump both the Democrats and Republicans that supported this continuing economic nonsense.

If there is any adult supervision left in Washington D.C., it is long past the time to call a stop to this meddling where the government has no business or expertise. 

President Reagan was right, government is the problem.

Milton Friedman was right, government spending is the problem.

Time to face reality.

“…In 1996, Congress adopted the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Pub. L. 104-199, 100 Stat. 2419 (Sept. 21, 1996). Congress passed DOMA because of a decades-long assault on marriage, and particularly in response to a Hawaii court decision that suggested there is a right to same-sex “marriage” in the Hawaii Constitution. The legislative history reflects a congressional concern about the effect that legalizing same-sex “marriage” in Hawaii would have on other states, federal laws, the institution of marriage, traditional notions of morality, and state sovereignty. H.R. Rep. No. 104-664 at 1-18 (1996), reprinted in 1996 U.S.C.C.A.N. 2905-23.

DOMA has two sections, one defining “marriage” for purposes of federal law, and the other affirming federalism principles under the authority granted by Article IV, Section 1 of the Constitution, the Full Faith and Credit Clause. The first section states that for purposes of federal law, marriage means a legal union between a man and a woman:


In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word “marriage” means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word “spouse” refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.

Pub. L. 104-199, sec 1, 100 Stat. 2419 (Sep. 21, 1996), codified at 1 U.S.C. § 7 (1997). The second section reaffirmed the power of the states to make their own decisions about marriage:


No State, territory, or possession of the United States, or Indian tribe, shall be required to give effect to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State, territory, possession, or tribe respecting a relationship between persons of the same sex that is treated as a marriage under the laws of such other State, territory, possession, or tribe, or a right or claim arising from such relationship.

Legislative History

DOMA was signed by President Clinton on Sept. 21, 1996, becoming Pub.L. 104-199, 110 Stat. 2419, codified at 1 USC 7 and 28 USC 1738C.  It passed the Congress as H.R. 3396. 

DOMA passed the U.S. House on July 12, 1996 by a vote of 342-67 (vote no. 316).  Floor statements on the bill will appear in the Congressional Record of that day.  House hearings on DOMA  were held on May 15, 1996 in a subcommittee of the Judiciary, Committee on the Constitution. The leading legislative record is the House Report, No. 104-664. The hearing before the subcommittee can be found here.

DOMA passed the U.S. Senate, unamended, on September 10, 1996, by a vote of 85 to 14 (vote no. 280).  The Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings on July 11, 1996 (on the bill S. 1740), and they were printed as Senate Hearings 104-533.


Religious Denominations Weigh In on Same-Sex Marriage

“…These actions by the Churches are generally in line with the views of most Americans. Two-thirds of American voters prefer defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Only 29% believe marriage can be defined as the union of any two people. Most also believe it is inappropriate for gay or lesbian church members to serve as pastors or bishops in Christian Churches. That view is especially strong among those who attend Christian Churches.

There is a strong link between belief in Scripture and opposition to same-sex marriage. Polling data from 32 states (see State-by-State Summary) clearly illustrates this correlation.

When it comes to who is responsible for determining the appropriateness of homosexuals in Church leadership roles, 86% of all voters believe decisions about gay and lesbian pastors should be left to churches themselves to resolve.

In the case of same-sex marriage, which has social ramifications beyond the Church, just 12% of Americans believe that judges should have a role in defining marriage, while only 5% think that elected officials should make such decisions. Overwhelmingly, 67% think that voters should make decisions regarding the definition of marriage. When voters are given the chance to weigh in on this issue through ballot initiatives, they routinely support traditional definitions of marriage. …”

Barack Obama’s victory was an ideological defeat for modern conservatism and a devastating blow to the Republican Party. It wasn’t just a case of one centrist candidate slipping past another centrist candidate at the finish line. This defeat — helped along by a sinking economy — was on the level of ideas. It points to nothing less than a new and still unfolding Obama “progressivism” in which Keynes replaces Friedman and “trickle-down” gives way to “bottom-up.”

This progressivism sees economic inequality as America’s gravest problem, and blames it on the conservatism of free markets, lower taxes, fewer regulations and smaller government. It wants to engineer equality through redistributive tax policies, the restructuring of markets through increased regulation, an expansion of entitlements, and more governmental activism. …”

“…White guilt in the West — especially in Europe and on the American left — confuses all this by seeing Islamic extremism as a response to oppression. The West is so terrified of being charged with its old sins of racism, imperialism and colonialism that it makes oppression an automatic prism on the non-Western world, a politeness. But Islamic extremists don’t hate the West because they are oppressed by it. They hate it precisely because the end of oppression and colonialism — not their continuance — forced the Muslim world to compete with the West. Less oppression, not more, opened this world to the sense of defeat that turned into extremism. * * *

But the international left is in its own contest with American exceptionalism. It keeps charging Israel and America with oppression hoping to mute American power. And this works in today’s world because the oppression script is so familiar and because American power cringes when labeled with sins of the white Western past. Yet whenever the left does this, it makes room for extremism by lending legitimacy to its claim of oppression. And Israel can never use its military fire power without being labeled an oppressor — which brings legitimacy to the enemies she fights. Israel roars; much of Europe supports Hezbollah.

Over and over, white guilt turns the disparity in development between Israel and her neighbors into a case of Western bigotry. This despite the fact that Islamic extremism is the most explicit and dangerous expression of human bigotry since the Nazi era. Israel’s historical contradiction, her torture, is to be a Western nation whose efforts to survive trap her in the moral mazes of white guilt. Its national defense will forever be white aggression.

But white guilt’s most dangerous suppression is to keep from discussion the most conspicuous reality in the Middle East: that the Islamic world long ago fell out of history. Islamic extremism is the saber-rattling of an inferiority complex. America has done a good thing in launching democracy as a new ideal in this region. Here is the possibility — if still quite remote — for the Islamic world to seek power through contribution rather than through menace.

44% Say Global Warming Due To Planetary Trends, Not People


“…Al Gore’s side may be coming to power in Washington, but they appear to be losing the battle on the idea that humans are to blame for global warming.

Forty-four percent (44%) of U.S. voters now say long-term planetary trends are the cause of global warming, compared to 41% who blame it on human activity.

Seven percent (7%) attribute global warming to some other reason, and nine percent (9%) are unsure in a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Democrats blame global warming on human activity, compared to 21% percent of Republicans. Two-thirds of GOP voters (67%) see long-term planetary trends as the cause versus 23% of Democrats. Voters not affiliated with either party by eight points put the blame on planetary trends.

In July 2006, 46% of voters said global warming is caused primarily by human activities, while 35% said it is due to long-term planetary trends.  …”


“…Last August, when prices at the gas pump were soaring, 65% of Americans said finding new sources of energy is more important that reducing the amount of energy Americans now consume. Twenty-eight percent (28%) said reducing current usage is more important.

Male voters by two-to-one put the emphasis on finding new energy sources while women are much more narrowly divided. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of investors say new sources of energy are more important, compared to 54% of non-investors.

Sixty-six percent (66%) of Republicans favor finding new sources of energy, as do 50% of Democrats and 53% of unaffiliated voters.

One of those new sources of energy is the building of more nuclear power plants. For three decades, nuclear power plants have generally been unpopular and the target of environmental groups, but 55% of voters now say more nuclear power plants should be built in the United States. Just 29% oppose new plants, with 15% undecided.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of GOP voters favor building new nuclear plants, with 22% opposed. The numbers are nearly identical for unaffiliated voters. Among Democrats, though, just 42% support the building of new plants, and 39% are against it.

Investors certainly like the idea of new plants, too. Sixty-three percent (63%) want to see new nuclear plans built, compared to 43% of non-investors.  …”

The Economic “Stimulus”

“…New things require long delays before they can get started, especially when they have to be done by politicians. Someone once said that Congress would take 30 days to make instant coffee– and Congress is just the beginning of the delays, as all sorts of competing interests jockey for position at the public trough.

Just putting together an environmental impact report for something new to be built can be a long process, especially if its findings are challenged by environmental extremists, who pay very little price for challenging, even if the delays caused by their challenges cost others millions of dollars.

In short, it can be years before the money that is supposed to stimulate the economy actually gets into the economy. And nobody knows what the economy will be like when that money finally gets into circulation.

A common problem with government economic policies in general is that it is very hard to predict how long it will be before the policy actually affects the economy. An economic stimulus policy created during a contraction in demand can take effect during an inflationary expansion of demand– and fuel still more inflation.

A trillion dollars or so, created out of thin air by a government that already has a huge deficit, can set off another round of inflation that can take some very painful new policies to bring under control– or can have even more painful effects, if it is not brought under control. The new administration may need that get-out-of-jail-free card.”


Lured to Disaster

“…The difference is that today there is some arbitrary percentage of one’s income that sets the limit to what the government will consider to be affordable housing. It used to be 25 percent but it might be 30 percent or some other proportion.

But, whatever the percentage, it is no longer the individual’s responsibility to choose housing that fits within that limit. It is somehow the taxpayers’ job to make up the difference, when someone chooses housing whose cost exceeds that magic number.

It is certainly no longer considered to be the individual’s own responsibility to acquire the work skills and experience to be able to earn enough to afford better housing as the years passed. Why do that, when the government can simply “spread the wealth around,” to use another political phrase?

The ultimate irony is that increasing government intervention in the housing market over the years has generally made housing less affordable than before, by any standard.

A hundred years ago, Americans spent a smaller percentage of their incomes on housing than they do today. In 1901, housing costs took 23 percent of the average American’s income. By 2003, it took 33 percent of a far larger income.

In particular places where government regulations and restrictions have been especially severe, such as coastal California, rents or monthly mortgage payments have averaged as high as 50 percent of the average person’s income.

Most of our problems are not nearly as severe as political “solutions.” In housing, government policies have lured people into situations that were untenable to them and to the country.”

Poll: Obama Should Model Himself After Reagan

“President Barack Obama should model himself after Ronald Reagan, according to Americans of both parties polled about which former president’s example to follow.

Reagan was the top choice among all voters, with 26 percent, followed by Franklin Roosevelt with 18 percent, John F. Kennedy with 17 percent, and Lincoln with 13 percent, according to a survey that Clarus Research Group compiled this past week.

“Reagan was the overwhelming favorite among Republican voters,” said Ron Faucheux, president of the nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based research group. “He received 59 percent as the president GOP voters want Obama to emulate. Nobody else came close.”

On the other hand, Faucheux said, “Democrats scattered their choices more.FDR was their top pick at 27 percent and was closely followed by Kennedy, with 26 percent. Lincoln, a Republican, ranked third among Democrats.”  …”

Full text of President Ronald Reagan’s first inaugural address

“Senator Hatfield, Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. President, Vice President Bush, Vice President Mondale, Senator Baker, Speaker O’Neill, Reverend Moomaw, and my fellow citizens.
To a few of us here today this is a solemn and most momentous occasion, and yet in the history of our nation it is a commonplace occurrence. The orderly transfer of authority as called for in the Constitution routinely takes place, as it has for almost two centuries, and few of us stop to think how unique we really are. In the eyes of many in the world, this every-four-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle.
Mr. President, I want our fellow citizens to know how much you did to carry on this tradition. By your gracious cooperation in the transition process, you have shown a watching world that we are a united people pledged to maintaining a political system which guarantees individual liberty to a greater degree than any other, and I thank you and your people for all your help in maintaining the continuity which is the bulwark of our republic. The business of our nation goes forward. These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed-income elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people.
Idle industries have cast workers into unemployment, human misery, and personal indignity. Those who do work are denied a fair return for their labor by a tax system which penalizes successful achievement and keeps us from maintaining full productivity.
But great as our tax burden is, it has not kept pace with public spending. For decades we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children’s future for the temporary convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals.
You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Why, then, should we think that collectively, as a nation, we’re not bound by that same limitation? We must act today in order to preserve tomorrow. And let there be no misunderstanding: We are going to begin to act, beginning today.
The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months, but they will go away. They will go away because we as Americans have the capacity now, as we’ve had in the past, to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom.
In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.
We hear much of special interest groups. Well, our concern must be for a special interest group that has been too long neglected. It knows no sectional boundaries or ethnic and racial divisions, and it crosses political party lines. It is made up of men and women who raise our food, patrol our streets, man our mines and factories, teach our children, keep our homes, and heal us when we’re sick–professionals, industrialists, shopkeepers, clerks, cabbies, and truck drivers. They are, in short, “we the people,” this breed called Americans.
Well, this administration’s objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunities for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination. Putting America back to work means putting all Americans back to work. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. All must share in the productive work of this “new beginning,” and all must share in the bounty of a revived economy. With the idealism and fair play which are the core of our system and our strength, we can have a strong and prosperous America, at peace with itself and the world.
So, as we begin, let us take inventory. We are a nation that has a government–not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.
It is my intention to curb the size and influence of the federal establishment and to demand recognition of the distinction between the powers granted to the federal government and those reserved to the states or to the people. All of us need to be reminded that the federal government did not create the states; the states created the federal government.
Now, so there will be no misunderstanding, it’s not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work–work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it.
If we look to the answer as to why for so many years we achieved so much, prospered as no other people on earth, it was because here in this land we unleashed the energy and individual genius of man to a greater extent than has ever been done before. Freedom and the dignity of the individual have been more available and assured here than in any other place on earth. The price for this freedom at times has been high, but we have never been unwilling to pay the price.
It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government. It is time for us to realize that we’re too great a nation to limit ourselves to small dreams. We’re not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing. So, with all the creative energy at our command, let us begin an era of national renewal. Let us renew our determination, our courage, and our strength. And let us renew our faith and our hope.
We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we’re in a time when there are no heroes, they just don’t know where to look. You can see heroes every day going in and out of factory gates. Others, a handful in number, produce enough food to feed all of us and then the world beyond. You meet heroes across a counter, and they’re on both sides of that counter. There are entrepreneurs with faith in themselves and faith in an idea who create new jobs, new wealth and opportunity. They’re individuals and families whose taxes support the government and whose voluntary gifts support church, charity, culture, art, and education. Their patriotism is quiet, but deep. Their values sustain our national life.
Now, I have used the words “they” and “their” in speaking of these heroes. I could say “you” and “your,” because I’m addressing the heroes of whom I speak–you, the citizens of this blessed land. Your dreams, your hopes, your goals are going to be the dreams, the hopes, and the goals of this administration, so help me God.
We shall reflect the compassion that is so much a part of your makeup. How can we love our country and not love our countrymen; and loving them, reach out a hand when they fall, heal them when they’re sick, and provide opportunity to make them self-sufficient so they will be equal in fact and not just in theory?
Can we solve the problems confronting us? Well, the answer is an unequivocal and emphatic “yes.” To paraphrase Winston Churchill, I did not take the oath I’ve just taken with the intention of presiding over the dissolution of the world’s strongest economy.
In the days ahead I will propose removing the roadblocks that have slowed our economy and reduced productivity. Steps will be taken aimed at restoring the balance between the various levels of government. Progress may be slow, measured in inches and feet, not miles, but we will progress. It is time to reawaken this industrial giant, to get government back within its means, and to lighten our punitive tax burden. And these will be our first priorities, and on these principles there will be no compromise.
On the eve of our struggle for independence a man who might have been one of the greatest among the Founding Fathers, Dr. Joseph Warren, president of the Massachusetts Congress, said to his fellow Americans, “Our country is in danger, but not to be despaired of . . . On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important questions upon which rests the happiness and the liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves.” Well, I believe we, the Americans of today, are ready to act worthy of ourselves, ready to do what must be done to ensure happiness and liberty for ourselves, our children, and our children’s children. And as we renew ourselves here in our own land, we will be seen as having greater strength throughout the world. We will again be the exemplar of freedom and a beacon of hope for those who do not now have freedom.
To those neighbors and allies who share our freedom, we will strengthen our historic ties and assure them of our support and firm commitment. We will match loyalty with loyalty. We will strive for mutually beneficial relations. We will not use our friendship to impose on their sovereignty, for our own sovereignty is not for sale. As for the enemies of freedom, those who are potential adversaries, they will be reminded that peace is the highest aspiration of the American people. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it; we will not surrender for it, now or ever.
Our forbearance should never be misunderstood. Our reluctance for conflict should not be misjudged as a failure of will. When action is required to preserve our national security, we will act. We will maintain sufficient strength to prevail if need be, knowing that if we do so we have the best chance of never having to use that strength. Above all, we must realize that no arsenal or no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today’s world do not have. It is a weapon that we as Americans do have. Let that be understood by those who practice terrorism and prey upon their neighbors. I’m told that tens of thousands of prayer meetings are being held on this day, and for that I’m deeply grateful. We are a nation under God, and I believe God intended for us to be free. It would be fitting and good, I think, if on each Inaugural Day in future years it should be declared a day of prayer.
This is the first time in our history that this ceremony has been held, as you’ve been told, on the West Front of the Capitol. Standing here, one faces a magnificent vista, opening up on the city’s special beauty and history. At the end of this open mall are those shrines to the giants on whose shoulders we stand.
Directly in front of me, the monument to a monumental man, George Washington, father of our country. A man of humility who came to greatness reluctantly. He led Americans out of revolutionary victory into infant nationhood. Off to one side, the stately memorial to Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration of Independence flames with his eloquence. And then, beyond the Reflecting Pool, the dignified columns of the Lincoln Memorial. Whoever would understand in his heart the meaning of America will find it in the life of Abraham Lincoln.
Beyond those monuments to heroism is the Potomac River, and on the far shore the sloping hills of Arlington National Cemetery, with its row upon row of simple white markers bearing crosses of Stars of David. They add up to only a tiny fraction of the price that has been paid for our freedom. Each one of those markers is a monument to the kind of hero I spoke of earlier. Their lives ended in places called Belleau Wood, the Argonne, Omaha Beach, Salerno, and halfway around the world on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Pork Chop Hill, the Chosin Reservoir, and in a hundred rice paddies and jungles of a place called Vietnam.
Under one such marker lies a young man, Martin Treptow, who left his job in a small town barbershop in 1917 to go to France with the famed Rainbow Division. There, on the western front, he was killed trying to carry a message between battalions under heavy artillery fire.
We’re told that on his body was found a diary. On the flyleaf under the heading “My Pledge,” he had written these words: “America must win this war. Therefore I will work, I will save, I will sacrifice, I will endure, I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone.”
The crisis we are facing today does not require of us the kind of sacrifice that Martin Treptow and so many thousands of others were called upon to make. It does require, however, our best effort and our willingness to believe in ourselves and to believe in our capacity to perform great deeds, to believe that together with God’s help we can and will resolve the problems which now confront us.
And after all, why shouldn’t we believe that? We are Americans.

OBAMA: My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

“Let it be told to the future world … that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it).”

America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. Fellow Countrymen:

At this second appearing to take the oath of the presidential office, there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement, somewhat in detail, of a course to be pursued, seemed fitting and proper. Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention, and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented. The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself; and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago, all thoughts were anxiously directed to an impending civil-war. All dreaded it — all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war — seeking to dissolve the Union, and divide effects, by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war; but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive; and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.

One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union, even by war; while the government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it. Neither party expected for the war, the magnitude, or the duration, which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease. Each looked for an easier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding. Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other.

It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. “Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!”

If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a Living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope — fervently do we pray — that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue, until all the wealth piled by the bond-man’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether.”

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.

Inauguration 2009 is just over a week away



For Federal Government events the Federal Government requires 1 porta-potty for every 300 estimated attendees.

For Private sector events the Federal government requires 1 porta-potty for every 75 estimated attendees.

Assuming that from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 people attend the inaugural event in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, January 20, then the inauguration event will require from 3,333 to 6,666 porta-potties using the Federal Government rule for a Federal Government sponsored event.

Using the Federal Government’s rule for Private events, the inauguration would require four times as many port-a-potties or from 13,333 to 26,666 port-a-potties.

Rumor has it that there will be only about 5,000 to 6,000 porta-potties spread around the Washington D.C. area.

With Universal Porta-Potty care, you must wait in line.

With Private Porta-Potty care, you just go when you need arises.

Then there are porta-potty phobias to deal with including:

  • Operation Porta Potty
  • A smell that traumatizes you, maybe even to the point of making it difficult for you to “go”.
  • Inability to go when you know that other people are waiting.
  • The feeling of being unclean after exiting a poo-poo hut.
  • The depression that ensues when you see that thousands of people are using the potties without washing their hands afterwards.

The next time President Obama or his commissars say we need to invest in alternative energy–wind turbines and solar panels–remember that less than 1% of the electricity produce in the United States comes from these sources. The reason is quite simple. Alternative energy is expensive!

The economy of the United States cannot grow and prosper without energy from fossil fuels to provide affordable electrical power, heating and transportation.

Anybody that tells you different is a liar and a con-man or con-woman and a closet socialist.

Roughly 50% of US electricity comes from coal powered plants, 20% from natural gas powered plants, 20% from nuclear power plants, and 7% from hydro electric plants.

Providing more and more tax-payer government subsidies to solar power and wind turbines to double the percentage of electricity produced by alternative energy in the next three years is wasteful and not the role of government.

That simple fact must be restated to counter environmentalists’ baseless allegations that the accumulation of man-made carbon dioxide, produced by cars, power plants and other human activities, is causing dangerous global warming.

Indeed, far from being a poisonous gas that will wreak havoc on the planet’s ecosystem, carbon dioxide is arguably the Earth’s best friend in that trees, wheat, peanuts, flowers, cotton and numerous other plants significantly benefit from increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Dr. Craig Idso of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, one of the nation’s leading carbon dioxide research centers, examined records of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and air temperature over the last 250,000 years. There were three dramatic episodes of global warming that occurred at the end of the last three ice ages. Interestingly, temperatures started to rise during those warming periods well before the atmospheric carbon dioxide started to increase. In fact, the carbon dioxide levels did not begin to rise until 400 to 1,000 years after the planet began to warm. Concludes Dr. Idso, “Clearly, there is no way that these real-world observations can be construed to even hint at the possibility that a significant increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide will necessarily lead to any global warming.”1 …”

Hiring more government employees union member and encouraging more illegal immigration to fill openning in the construction industry are political payoffs and not a stimulus packgage.

Nuclear Renaissance – World


 Computers need electricity for power and cooling both on the desktop and in server rooms and data centers.

Larger LCD screens and monitors also need significantly more electricity as will “electric” cars if they become affordable over the next decade.

Nuclear power plants currently supply about 20% of the electrical needs of the United States and 16% world wide.

Nuclear power plants are experiencing a revival both in the United States and abroad especially in China, India, France, and Japan.

One key component of such a plant is its computer operating system or the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems.

Given the challenges of such an operating system, one can only speculate as to whether or not the largest software company in the world, Microsoft, will take an active part in developing–Windows Nuclear–the operating system for nuclear power plants from the micro to large nuclear power plants. 

Will Microsoft partner with General Electric to build the next generation of nuclear power plants in the USA as well as abroad?

Will there be a Windows Nuclear?

The most common method today is through nuclear fission, though other methods include nuclear fusion and radioactive decay. All utility-scale reactors[1] heat water to produce steam, which is then converted into mechanical work for the purpose of generating electricity or propulsion. In 2007, 14% of the world’s electricity came from nuclear power. More than 150 nuclear-powered naval vessels have been built, and a few radioisotope rockets have been produced. …”

“…As of 2005, nuclear power provided 6.3% of the world’s energy and 15% of the world’s electricity, with the U.S., France, and Japan together accounting for 56.5% of nuclear generated electricity.[2] As of 2007, the IAEA reported there are 439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world,[3] operating in 31 countries.[4]

In 2007, nuclear´s share of global electricity generation dropped to 14%. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the main reason for this was an earthquake in western Japan on 16 July 2007, which shut down all seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant. There were also several other reductions and “unusual outages” experienced in Korea and Germany. Also, increases in the load factor for the current fleet of reactors appear to have plateaued.[5]

The United States produces the most nuclear energy, with nuclear power providing 19%[6] of the electricity it consumes, while France produces the highest percentage of its electrical energy from nuclear reactors—78% as of 2006.[7] In the European Union as a whole, nuclear energy provides 30% of the electricity.[8] Nuclear energy policy differs between European Union countries, and some, such as Austria and Ireland, have no active nuclear power stations. In comparison, France has a large number of these plants, with 16 multi-unit stations in current use. …”


Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems in Nuclear Power

Plants: A Time of Transition

“…I&C systems are the nervous system of a nuclear power plant. They monitor all aspects of the plant’s health and help respond with the care and adjustments needed.

Progress in electronics and information technology (IT) has created incentives to replace traditional analog instrumentation and control (I&C) systems in nuclear power plants with digital I&C systems, i.e. systems based on computers and microprocessors. Digital systems offer higher reliability, better plant performance and additional diagnostic capabilities. Analog systems will gradually become obsolete in the general IT shift to digital technology. About 40% of the world’s operating reactors have been modernized to include at least some digital I&C systems. Most newer plants also include digital I&C systems.


Digital I&C systems have posed new challenges for the industry and regulators, who have had to build up the methods, data and experience to assure themselves that the new systems meet all reliability and performance requirements. In general, countries with more new construction of nuclear reactors have had greater incentives and opportunities to develop the needed capabilities. Other countries are still in the process of doing so. …”

For Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., which operates nuclear power plants in Canada, China and Slovenia, downtime just isn’t an option. About 15 to 20 years ago, the Mississauga, Ont.-based company turned to QNX’s real-time operating system to keep its plants running. Since then, it’s upgraded to version 4.0 and is now rolling out 6.0 – and that’s it. …”

“We chose QNX initially because of its micro-kernel architecture, its performance and its real-time capabilities,” said Ross Judd, manager of information and control systems development with Atomic Energy. “Our applications are real-time applications – they involve data acquisition through machine interfaces and control rooms.”

Only a few components that are critical to maintaining the operation of a function are in what’s called the protected kernel. All other elements are in modules that plug into the kernel. That means if one function fails, it won’t bring down the other functions; they’re protected from corrupting each other.

“When you’ve got Microsoft on your desktop and you have a problem with Explorer or Excel, it can hang up your computer where your only option is to shut the entire thing down,” said Shewchuk. “It might be something as silly as a printer driver, but it affects the whole operating system because all the code is in this monolithic structure.”

In a micro-kernel operating system, upgrading software consists of slotting in one module, rather than bringing down the entire system. “If you want to go from having one switch to multiple switches, you can link those together seamlessly without bringing the entire system down and having to reboot an entirely new system up,” he said.

The old-fashioned way of thinking was that when you hard-wired all these applications together, your systems could run faster. That was true 20 years ago when systems were much less complex, said Shewchuk, but nowadays even simple devices connect to the Internet and have a graphical capability, and many of them are networked.

“The amount of code and complexity of coding becomes more and more difficult and the amount of discipline it takes to maintain the operating system in those environments is incredibly complex,” he said. “It’s a more clean, defined process for coding in a micro-kernel.” …”


Truck-delivered Micro-Nuclear Reactor for Clean Energy Within Five Years

Nuclear Power May Be in Early Stages of a Revival

“…When the industry first said several years ago that it would resume building plants, deep skepticism greeted the claim. Not since 1973 had anybody in the United States ordered a nuclear plant that was actually built, and the obstacles to a new generation of plants seemed daunting.

But now, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 21 companies say they will seek permission to build 34 power plants, from New York to Texas. Factories are springing up in Indiana and Louisiana to build reactor parts. Workers are clearing a site in Georgia to put in reactors. Big TVs = Big electric bills

“…According to a recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council it’s because of that ginormous TV set you just bought. We always figured that LCDs and plasmas used less power than CRTs, but apparently digital HDTVs actually suck up more power than analog TVs (see the chart below), and to make matters worse, we’re buying bigger and bigger television sets than we used to. They’re predicting that in four years our TVs will be consuming 50% more power per year than they do today, what worries them is that hardly anyone thinks about how much power their TV is going to use when they’re buying it (we certainly don’t), so they’re trying to get manufacturers to  make their displays more energy efficient and are asking the EPA to establish a single annual energy-consumption number for TVs that’s sort of like the one they already have for air conditioners. …”

Postponing Reality

“…While Detroit’s Big Three are laying off thousands of workers, Toyota is hiring thousands of workers right here in America, where a substantial share of all our Toyotas are manufactured.

Will this save Detroit or Michigan? No.

Detroit and Michigan have followed classic liberal policies of treating businesses as prey, rather than as assets. They have helped kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. So have the unions. So have managements that have gone along to get along.

Toyota, Honda and other foreign automakers are not heading for Detroit, even though there are lots of experienced automobile workers there. They are avoiding the rust belts and the policies that have made those places rust belts.

A bailout of Detroit’s Big Three would be only the latest in the postponements of reality. As for automobile dealers, they can probably sell Toyotas just as easily as they sold Chevvies. And Toyotas will require just as many tires per car, as well as other parts from automobile parts suppliers.”
